Job description

Job Description
Role - Activity Instructor (Outdoor Resource Centre)
Location - GCHSCP, 75 North Canal Bank St, G4 9XP
Contract Status - Permanent
Are you interested in working for the largest local authority in Scotland, in partnership with Social Work and Education Services, to help improve the health and wellbeing of our children? Then, you are in the right place!
We have an opportunity for an Activity Instructor within our Outdoor Resource Centre (ORC) which is an Outdoor Education service that specialises in the use of adventurous outdoor experiences to support children in Glasgow who have experienced significant and complex trauma.
Adventurous outdoor experiences are delivered in a trauma informed way to maximise the likelihood of children feeling safe, working collaboratively, having choice over what happens, being trusted, being empowered and recognising and supporting their resilience. This is achieved by allowing children to establish relationships with a significant adult, finding an activity that they enjoy and an opportunity for activity-based mindfulness.
Time spent with the child or group of children taking part in adventurous outdoor activities provides significant insights as to how a child functions in areas such as, communication, expressing themselves, managing anxiety, managing risk and regulation. These insights can be used on their own or can contribute to a larger assessment process along with partner services such as locality Social Work, Glasgow Intensive Family Support Service, ISMS or Forensic Community Adolescent Mental Health Services (FCAMHS)
The Activity Instructor role is critical to the delivery of safe and effective activities supporting children returning to Glasgow City from out of authority placements, as well as those living with their families, those in kinship, foster and residential placements. Working closely with Intensive Services colleagues, particularly ISMS, ISMS (ATR), Glasgow Intensive Family Support Service and the Virtual School, delivering joint support packages for children and their families. The postholder is therefore required to be enthusiastic, recovery focussed and able to manage change and risk.
The Activity Instructor is responsible for:
The delivery of safe and challenging adventurous activities across Central Scotland. Activities include Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Canoeing, SUPing, Gorge Walking and Mountain Biking.
Designing and delivering tailored programmes in conjunction with partner/referring agencies.
Contributing to the care plan for Looked After and Care Experienced children through assessment of needs, reporting, and collaborative work with partner/referring agencies.
Contributing to the daily running of the Centre though duty instructor responsibilities, maintenance and safety checks of equipment and general maintenance and cleaning of facilities.
Working according to the principles of trauma informed practice to ensure the care, development, and wellbeing of children.
Applicants should have a high degree of experience in the industry and possess a range of appropriate National Governing Body Qualifications for the delivery of the following activities: Summer Mountaineering, Rock climbing (Single Pitch), Canoeing (open and white water), Kayaking (white water, inland open water and coastal), and off-road Mountain biking. Please refer to the Person Specification for full details of the required qualifications, skills, knowledge, and competencies required for the above role.
Membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme is essential on taking up appointment. Please note successful candidates for the above role will be required to pay for their PVG Membership.
These roles are excepted under Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exclusions and Exceptions) (Scotland) Order 2013 (as amended).
Interviews will take place week commencing 30th June 2025.
