Accountability & Learning Officer, London

When humanitarian crises strike, the DEC stands poised to coordinate and deliver responses around the world.

Learning and insight are essential to improving our response efforts, and we are seeking an Accountability & Learning Officer to contribute to learning and growth for the DEC and its 15 member charities.

We require someone with monitoring and evaluation experience and a strong understanding of global humanitarian crises to play a vital role in our dedicated charity.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is a membership organisation comprising 15 of the UK’s leading humanitarian charities, including Action Against Hunger, British Red Cross, Oxfam GB, Save the Children UK, and others.

We coordinate the UK public’s response to overseas disasters, raising funds quickly and efficiently to save, protect, and rebuild lives.

Since 1963, we have run 79 appeals, raising over £2.5 billion to aid disaster-affected communities worldwide.

What You’ll Do

This role enables the DEC and its member charities to respond effectively to emergencies and provide community-focused assistance.

As an Accountability & Learning Officer, you will support learning and growth initiatives, shape policy influence, and work across areas such as climate adaptation, flexible funding, and locally led responses.

Your responsibilities include:

  1. Assessing humanitarian crises for DEC appeal eligibility
  2. Maintaining and improving reporting templates
  3. Setting up and overseeing learning activities during the appeal cycle
  4. Managing the Collective Initiatives and Shared Services portfolio
  5. Supporting DEC research and learning projects
  6. Helping members achieve climate and environmental targets
  7. Organizing learning events and workshops
  8. Responding to queries from members and partners
  9. Acting as deputy for the Accountability & Learning Manager
What You’ll Bring

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • Experience with monitoring, evaluation, and research design or implementation
  • Experience in the international humanitarian or development sector within NGOs, UN agencies, or similar organizations
  • A strong understanding of global humanitarian crises
  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles, programming, and sector operations
  • Understanding of M&E frameworks and methodologies
  • Interest in key policy areas within the humanitarian system
  • Ability to analyze large datasets and qualitative and quantitative data
  • A degree-level qualification, preferably postgraduate, in a relevant field
