Overview

NHSE England is recruiting an Academy Lead [Diagnostics Radiography] on a secondment for a fixed term basis for the South East Imaging Training Academy. The post holder will sit within the NHSE South East Cancer and Diagnostics Programme team and will lead the ongoing development and implementation of the South East Imaging Training Academy. The role, in partnership with the Academy Lead [Consultant Radiologist], provides South East regional leadership for the delivery of high quality, cross specialty, and multi-professional Imaging training through leading the South East Imaging Training Academy and the core academy team. The successful candidate will be passionate about the delivery and management of imaging education and training in the South East, promoting lifelong learning across the professional development continuum from qualification to retirement. They will recognise the contributions of all members of the multi-professional health care team, including support staff and clinicians. The fixed term basis is due to funding availability until 31 March 2026.

Main duties of the job

The overall aim is to increase the number of learners transitioning to the workforce using an academy model to increase training capacity, provide a high quality and enhanced training experience and accelerate learning to independent practice.

The successful candidate should have an excellent understanding of and involvement in the delivery and management of imaging education and training, experience as a senior clinician with HCPC registration working in the field of imaging in the UK, a transformation leadership style, and experience in strategic thinking, problem solving and calculated risk management. This role is integral to the development of the academy and will be responsible for providing leadership aligned to the aims of the academy. The key outputs from the role will be:

  • increased training capacity across a region
  • provision of multi-professional training across a team
  • provision of flexible and high-quality training environments for the imaging workforce, including clinical radiology, diagnostic radiography and sonography, medical physicists and imaging & mammography support workforce
  • enabled immersive training in priority areas to support rapid development of skills
  • optimisation of available teaching faculty

Job responsibilities

In partnership with the Academy Lead (Radiologist), key elements of the job role will include:

  • Provide and receive highly complex, sensitive and contentious information, including presenting information about projects and dependencies to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders in formal settings including NHSE; ICS Diagnostic Leads; NHS Trusts; Imaging Networks; Education Providers; NHSE SE Quality Teams.
  • Employ effective communication, negotiation and influencing skills to enable effective change management with stakeholders at all levels (including senior management) who may hold differing and contentious views.
  • Work with others, including the NHSE SE AHP Lead, the NHSE SE Regional Postgraduate Dean, the NHSE SE Schools of Radiology, and the NHSE SE Cancer & Diagnostics Programme Team to develop consistency and commonality across education and training in England.
  • Ensure high standards of education and training as defined by the Nursing & Midwifery Council, HCPC, GMC, and other national bodies with respect to education and training in the South East.
  • Commitment to regional and national vision, policies, and processes for effective educational quality management.
  • Ensure programmes of work are aligned to and deliver regional strategic objectives, KPIs and regulatory compliance.
  • Deliver programmes against short, medium and long-term KPIs, delegating delivery of work and allocating internal/external resources to meet strategic objectives.

Knowledge
  • Extensive knowledge of specialist areas (imaging, education and/or business management), acquired through postgraduate diploma or equivalent experience, plus further specialist knowledge or experience to master’s level equivalent.
  • Knowledge of healthcare education and training policy and systems.
  • Experience of developing and implementing policy and programmes to support delivery of aims and objectives, including multi-professional training opportunities and inclusion of the wider workforce.
Qualifications
  • A clinical qualification, registered with HCPC with active registration/license to practice
  • A higher diploma/degree in clinical education or leadership
