Job description

Part time fixed term

Location: York

Salary: £34,610 to £39,906 per annum (£13,844 to £15,962 pro rata)

Introduction to YSJ University

Situated in the heart of the historic city of York, and with the addition of our London Campus, York St John University has a long and proud tradition as a distinguished higher education provider.

Our success is founded on the quality of academic teaching and research, our thriving campus environments, our professional and pastoral support, and our values of an inclusive, innovative and ambitious community with a strong sense of belonging.

The Team

Library & Learning Services supports learning and teaching across the University through the development and maintenance of the University’s library collections, and through engagement with students to develop their academic and digital skills. The service also supports the University’s research activity through provision of the University’s research output and research data repositories. Library and Learning Services also provides accessibility services, as well as expertise in accessibility and inclusive learning, to students and staff.

The Role

We are looking to appoint a maternity cover to the post of Academic Liaison Librarian—an important role in our learning and library collection development offering to students and staff. Working as part of the Academic Services Team (one of Library & Learning Services' three core teams), your focus will be to provide expertise in information literacy, student learning, and library collection development. The role will also involve working in partnership with academic colleagues to embed information literacy development support within the curriculum, ensuring a consistent student experience across all programmes and Schools, but with a specific focus on making a significant contribution to the teaching, learning and assessment experience within selected disciplines (you will support Law, Sociology, Criminology, and Policing). Experience of these discipline areas is not essential as a collections and teaching handbook is provided—the ability to learn and adapt is more important. You will have budgetary responsibility for developing the library resources for your disciplines in line with teaching, learning and research needs.

You will have the opportunity to participate in Library & Learning Services' contributions to University developments in inclusive and equitable teaching, anti-racist practice, and sustainable futures, and we will encourage and support you to engage in CPD and pedagogic/subject research.

The successful candidate will have a commitment to improving learning outcomes for students, with the ability to teach groups of students in a variety of environments and experience of teaching and/or supporting learning.

14.8 hours (0.4 FTE) per week, up to 12 months maternity cover until 9th October 2026. Working pattern is suggested as between Monday to Friday — 2 full days (7.4 hours each), 3 short days (4.9 hours each), or 4 half days (3.7 hours each). Pattern to be agreed between the successful candidate and Academic Services Manager. Based on York Campus. Due to the contract size, and this being a student-facing role, there is an expectation of this role being undertaken on campus.

Required skills and experience

You must have a postgraduate library qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience in librarianship.
