Job description

Northern College is seeking an Academic Chair in our Academic department. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational, planning, and financial management skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills to mediate, build consensus, and resolve conflict. The candidate must also possess excellent problem-solving skills to address operational challenges. Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset.

Reporting to the Dean of Trades, Technology & Apprenticeship, the successful candidate will support the Dean assigned to programs such as Law Clerk, Vet Sciences, Mining, Environmental, and Instrumentation. The Academic Chair is a member of the Academic Leadership Team, providing support and direction to faculty, administration, and support staff. In consultation with the Dean, the Academic Chair is responsible for supporting the planning, development, maintenance, delivery, and ongoing review of related full- and part-time post-secondary programs, partnerships, projects, and services.

What you will be doing:
  1. Contributing to the College’s Vision/Mission/Strategic Priorities by participating in internal committees and supporting the development and maintenance of strategic partnerships and projects.
  2. Developing and implementing academic strategies, policies, and procedures specific to departments and program offerings under the supervision of the respective Dean.
  3. Leading the annual and comprehensive program review process, including preparation for College Quality Assurance Accreditation Process (CQAAP) and other external accreditation processes, ensuring programs and course learning outcomes meet standards.
  4. Participating in establishing enrollment targets and projecting student enrollment for academic planning, as outlined in the Strategic Enrolment Management & Marketing plan.
  5. Ensuring student retention and success, and attainment of program objectives on the Haileybury Campus.
  6. Identifying staffing requirements for part-time faculty and maintaining high performance through recruitment, development, motivation, evaluation, and training.
  7. Assigning part-time faculty to appropriate courses, collaborating with Human Resources for employee management.
  8. Managing financial planning activities, including developing, monitoring, and forecasting budgets, and reporting to the Dean.
  9. Maintaining collaborative partnership, consortium, and articulation agreements with other educational institutions, ensuring compliance with terms and directions from the Dean.

What you will need to be considered:
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Business, Biological Sciences, Mining Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, or related field.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in higher education or managing human resources and budgets, with demonstrated leadership and strategic planning skills. Relevant experience in team management or external partnerships is also valued.
  • Proficiency with College systems (MIS) and MS Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success, teaching excellence, and quality education.
  • An appreciation for and ability to incorporate the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Indigenous Education Protocols.
