Job overview

We are looking for a Clinical Psychologist (band 7/8a) w ho is creative, motivated and passionate about the role that psychology can have within Older People’s Mental Health Services, and are pleased to be able to offer a post within South Derbyshire, working 3 days within the South Derbyshire Older People's CMHT and 1 day within the Memory Assessment Service (covering the South Derbyshire area).

The post gives an exciting opportunity to build on and develop expertise in both older people’s mental health and neuropsychology.

The post is offered at a band 7 or 8a (dependent on experience) with the potential for progression from band 7 to 8a through a competency-based gateway.

Main duties of the job

The post gives the opportunity to join teams that value the contribution that Psychology brings to their work. The Psychologists who work across our service value the variety that working within Older People’s Mental Health Services can bring and enjoy using a broad range of knowledge and skills to provide assessment, formulation and interventions, conduct neuropsychological assessments for complex presentations, offer advice and consultation to colleagues, and to be involved in training and development initiatives.

The post is line managed through a robust Psychology structure and offers great opportunities to develop a specialist area of psychological expertise.

Please note that this post is a 4-day a week permanent post (0.8wte). However, there may be an opportunity to increase the hours to full-time on a fixed-term basis.

The successful candidate will be welcomed into a vibrant and creative team of skilled Psychologists who have extensive experience, knowledge and skill, and are passionate about working within older people’s services.

There are excellent opportunities for high quality supervision, and within our team we have Psychologists with further training and experience in a range of therapeutic models (e.g. ACT, CFT, Systemic Therapy, ISTDP, MBT and EMDR), and Psychologists who have done further training in Neuropsychology and are on the SRCN.

Our Psychology Service has a strong focus on staff wellbeing, is keen to support and develop research activities, and is leading the Trust’s development of trauma-informed approaches. There are excellent opportunities for peer support, to join a range of specialist supervision groups and to participate in regular in-house and external CPD. We also have strong links with local Psychology Training Courses and provide regular placements and teaching.

The post holder will need to be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), eligible for BPS Chartership and able to meet the travel requirements of the post.

Person specification
Training and Qualifications
  • Good Honours degree in Psychology (2:1 or above). Eligibility for Graduate membership of the BPS
  • Post–graduate doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 or those in lateral transfer) as accredited by the BPS/HCPC
  • Registered as a Practitioner Psychologist by the HCPC
  • Eligible for Chartered status with the BPS
  • In addition to routine CPD and supervision, has demonstrated a clear commitment to developing a specialist area of expertise relevant to the post through significant training, personal study or experience (essential for Band 8a role)
  • Post qualification training in supervision of other psychologists (essential for Band 8a role)
  • Significant post qualification specialist training / experience through having provided assessment/intervention to older people with mental health problems including dementia and other cognitive problems under clinical supervision whilst working as a Specialist Clinical Psychologist (essential for Band 8a role)
  • Chartered status with the BPS
Experience
  • Experience of working with people with a range of mental health / psychological problems and across the lifespan and a variety of settings
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS and HCPC. (Applicable to and essential for 8a role)
  • Evidence of taking full clinical responsibility for clients with a range of mental health problems and severity, within the context of multi-disciplinary care (essential for Band 8a role)
  • Expertise and interest in a specialist area relevant to older adult mental health
Knowledge
  • Assessment and therapeutic skills related to complex, severe and enduring mental health problems
Other
  • Ability to meet the travel requirements of the post, which includes being able to travel efficiently to different bases and completing home visits
