Descriptions & requirements

This is a regional role with expected travel between your allocated establishments and other prison/group buildings.

The post is temporary on a loan basis; you must seek approval from your current Line Manager before applying. The loan period is 12 months.

MoJ offers hybrid working arrangements where business needs allow. This flexible, informal arrangement combines working from your base location, different MoJ sites, and/or from home (note: role can only be performed within the UK). All employees are expected to spend at least 60% of their working time in an office, depending on local estate capacity.

Some roles may not be suitable for hybrid working, which will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and reviewed regularly.

For nationally advertised roles: Candidates will be assigned to the nearest viable office to their home postcode, on the respective pay scale, at an HQ building, Justice Collaboration Centre, or Justice Satellite Office. A minimum of 60% of working time is expected to be spent in the office, subject to estate capacity.

Current MoJ employees’ base locations will need to be updated to the nearest viable office and aligned to the appropriate pay scale, including any necessary amendments to legacy arrangements.

MoJ is undergoing Civil Service reforms, affecting terms and conditions for new staff. Existing civil service employees transferring to MoJ will retain their current terms if on 'modernised' terms, or move to 'unmodernised' terms if applicable. Details will be provided if an offer is made.

Specialist grade staff will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.

Employees receiving Mark Time or Pay Protection should review the new policies on promotions, available on the employee intranet.

MoJ promotes flexible working, including part-time, flexible, and job-sharing arrangements, which will be considered according to the role's demands and business needs.

The department offers benefits such as:

  • 25 days annual leave on appointment, increasing to 30 days after five years.
  • Option to buy or sell up to three days leave annually, plus paid public holidays and a privilege day. Leave for part-time and job share posts is prorated.

Pension

The Civil Service provides a choice of pension schemes to suit different needs.

Training

Extensive training and development opportunities are available to staff.

Networks

Employee networks support minority groups and facilitate communication with senior management. Current networks include those for minority ethnic employees, employees with disabilities, carers, women, and LGBT+ staff.

Support policies include 'Family Friendly' options, flexible benefits, childcare support schemes, paid parental leave, and free annual sight tests for computer users.

Recruitment is based on merit, with fair and open competition. Candidates can raise concerns through the Civil Service Commission if necessary.

MoJ is committed to disability inclusion, offering adjustments throughout recruitment and employment processes. Candidates can request reasonable adjustments via the application form and seek additional support if needed.

Applicants must meet the Civil Service nationality requirements, including rights to work in the UK and settled status under the EUSS.

A reserve list may be maintained for up to 12 months for similar future roles. A sift may be conducted based on the 'Working Together' behavior, with further assessment during the full sift if necessary.

Experience will be assessed through CV, work history, and evidence provided. Interview dates are to be confirmed.

Behaviors assessed include: Working Together, Making Effective Decisions, Seeing the Big Picture, Managing a Quality Service.

Strengths will be evaluated but are not disclosed in advance. More information is available on the assessment process.

Use of AI: All submitted evidence must be truthful and accurate. Plagiarism, including AI-generated content presented as one's own, is prohibited.
