A government organization in the UK is seeking an Engagement Officer to support stakeholder engagement efforts. The role requires strong written and interpersonal skills, with responsibilities including managing communications and providing briefings. Ideal candidates will have experience in stakeholder engagement and digital tools. This role offers an opportunity for career development within a collaborative team environment.
We are looking to appoint one permanent role and one role for a 12-month assignment with potential to be made permanent. These roles will play a vital part in supporting and coordinating the stakeholder engagement work of the FCRM Directorate. This includes supporting business planning and engagement with key internal and external stakeholders, the government, and the public.
The roles will involve applying your strong interpersonal and writing skills and understanding of different communication styles to produce clear, accurate, consistent, and engaging messaging on FCRM, to protect and enhance the business’ reputation. The successful applicants must be able to work at pace, balance competing priorities, and have an eye for detail.
As part of this role, you will provide direct stakeholder engagement support to our Chair, Chief Executive, Executive Director and Directors, as well as working closely with teams across the business and with colleagues in other government departments.
Your work could include a mixture of reactive and proactive work, such as:
• managing a busy mailbox and logging work on a regular basis
• responding to correspondence and enquires in an effective manner
• providing timely and effective briefings, presentations and papers
• writing reports, producing media lines to take and organising digital publishing
• supporting large business meetings, conferences and events
• building relationships across the business to support delivery of work

Employees are expected to take part in incident response; this may include some out of hours working and as an Engagement Officer you'll have a key role in updating stakeholders during incident response and recovery for all types of incidents.
The team
The FCRM Stakeholder Management team delivers essential communications and engagement services within the Environment Agency. We connect the FCRM Directorate with stakeholders across government, ensuring accurate, accessible information is shared effectively. Our fast-paced team handles enquiries, produces ministerial briefings, manages digital content, supports events, and advises on stakeholder strategy. We’re collaborative, agile, and supportive, working across teams and using digital tools to deliver high-quality products and outcomes. Occasional travel and face-to-face meetings are expected.
Experience/skills required
Required
• Written communicationskills with the ability to translate complex or technical information into concise, accessible content for non-technical audiences.
• Experience using a broad suite of digital tools, including Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams etc
• Proven experience in stakeholder engagementor communications within a similar organisation
• Inbox management, triaging and prioritising high volumes of competing demands, including identification and escalation of priority issues.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with experience liaising across technical, policy and communication teams.
Desirable (opportunity to be developed)
• Experience drafting formal responsessuch as:briefings for senior executives/government ministers, Parliamentary questions and Freedom of Information requests
• Experience preparing stakeholder update papers with clear messaging tailored to diverse audiences.
• Ability to act as secretariatfor stakeholder meetings, including minute-taking, agenda setting and tracking actions
• Working knowledge ofFreedom of Information and data protection legislation.
