Job summary

A government environmental agency in the UK is seeking an experienced Landfill Gas Technical Leader. Job description

Are you an experienced technical leader in the landfill gas sector? Working in our national team you will lead on implementing regulatory strategies to reduce methane emissions from landfill sites, work that will help deliver the UK net-zero ambition. Using your experience and knowledge of the landfill sector you will contribute to mitigating the impact of methane emissions on climate change whilst also improving the technical resilience in landfill gas management across our operational delivery teams nationwide.

We are recruiting 2 x Landfill Gas Technical Leaders:

1 x permanent post
1 x temporary post as a Fixed Term Contract/Assignment for 12 months.

You will:
• Contribute to ongoing methane emissions surveys contracts and programmes
• Work with Defra Evidence and Chief Scientist Group on complimentary research projects that are looking to improve UK Greenhouse Gas Inventory reporting.
• Engage with the landfill industry to develop appropriate measures improving landfill gas management.
• Develop the emissions measurement research into a regulatory tool to enable whole site landfill gas emissions to be quantified through the landfill permits.
• Develop training for Operational delivery teams and support them in regulation of their sites.
• Work with our National Permitting colleagues to develop bespoke permit conditions and Best Available Techniques to support our regulatory activities

The team

You’ll join our Landfill, Deposit for Recovery and Waste Climate Change team. We set regulatory standards and provide advice and guidance. We’re a dispersed team who work with a wide range of technical and project teams across the country.

We’re part of the Environment and Business Directorate. We inform and deliver the government's key environmental objectives; using evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation we influence policy, legislation and secure resources to do more for the environment.

Experience/skills required

We’re looking for a technical leader who believes that having a truly diverse, representative and engaged workforce is fundamental to protect the environment.

You will have experience of landfill regulation gained through varied, practical experience, in particular landfill gas management. You will work on your own initiative to take decisions and solve problems, while maintaining effective communication with the team and customers.

You will have excellent communication and influencing skills. You will apply these skills working with internal teams, industry and government.

You will have a good knowledge of the collection, analysis and interpretation of data and experience in developing and delivering training materials that builds knowledge and capability in others.

As a leader, you will be focussed on delivering and achieving results, meeting timescales and working to deadlines. Finally, you will be comfortable in working in an agile way turning your attention to different priorities as they arise.
