Job description

We are looking for a skilled and creative 2D Motion Designer to join our visual storytelling team at Simpli / Fern. You’ll play a key role in shaping the visual identity of our explainers, video essays, and documentaries through clean, compelling motion graphics and animation.

As a 2D Motion Designer, you will collaborate closely with writers, editors, and producers to create visual assets that clarify complex ideas and elevate storytelling. This role is ideal for someone with a strong design sensibility, motion design expertise, and a passion for journalistic and visual content.

The role will be fully remote and will be on a freelance basis. Work is expected to be available very often.

Tasks

Motion Design & Animation

1. Create polished 2D animations, including maps, text animations, transitions, and data visualization
2. Stylize and enhance footage to ensure consistency with brand and story tone
3. Develop visual templates for recurring formats
4. Work with editors and producers to ensure seamless integration of motion graphics into final edits
5. Create assets that are adaptable across different platforms (e.g. social, web)

Creative Collaboration

1. Interpret scripts and storyboards into engaging visual sequences
2. Work closely with editors and the creative team to align visuals with editorial goals
3. Contribute ideas for visual metaphors, sequences, and storytelling formats
4. Maintain visual coherence and quality across projects

Requirements

1. Professional proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, especially After Effects, Illustrator, and Photoshop
2. Strong aesthetic skills, with a solid grasp of composition, typography, and color theory
3. 3+ years of professional experience in motion design (ideally in explainers, video essays, or documentaries)
4. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, creative environment
5. Enthusiastic about visual storytelling and editorial content
6. Intermediate German language skills
