Job description

The Community Services Director is seeking an individual to perform highly skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and heavy equipment.

This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position offering a full-time benefits package. Starting salary is commensurate with experience. The position is open until filled.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position. The listed examples may not include all duties found in this class):

  1. Overhauls, adjusts, maintains, and repairs motor-driven equipment such as automobiles, trucks, graders, tractors, sweepers, loaders, and related mechanical equipment; installs or builds special accessory equipment and attachments.
  2. Performs major repairs by disassembling, replacing worn or broken parts, and assembling and adjusting gasoline and diesel engines, clutches, transmissions, drive trains, rear and front ends, suspension systems, electrical and ignition systems, brakes, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, cooling systems, exhaust and pollution control devices, and accessory power equipment.
  3. Uses computer diagnostics or troubleshooting tools to identify faults in equipment with internal computer-based controls.
  4. Performs minor and major tune-ups of electrical and fuel systems using appropriate testing and repair equipment and tools.
  5. Performs emergency repairs of equipment at job sites or equipment locations as required.
  6. Welds and modifies equipment, fabricates parts and devices as necessary or directed, and installs special equipment for other city departments.
  7. Installs lights, brackets, mirrors, and other accessories; replaces snowplowing and sanding equipment.
  8. Maintains digital Fleet Maintenance records by submitting repair information promptly upon job completion.
  9. Operates vehicles and equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  10. Performs scheduled maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, tire changes, and other services.
  11. Occasionally repairs small engines.
  12. Maintains availability for emergency situations.
  13. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, agencies, and the public.
  14. Follows safe work procedures related to assigned tasks.
  15. Maintains accurate computerized work logs, repair orders, and maintenance records.
  16. Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

Thorough knowledge of maintenance and repair practices for heavy-duty gasoline and diesel engines/equipment, including SCR/DPF systems, wiring systems, high-pressure fuel systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and welding/metal fabrication. Skilled in using mechanic's tools and equipment. Ability to follow detailed instructions, diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, advise operators, maintain computerized work systems, and perform strenuous physical labor indoors and outdoors under varying conditions.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

High School diploma or equivalent. Seven (7) years’ experience in heavy-duty engine and equipment repair. Extensive training in SCR/DPF emissions systems, welding, electrical, and fuel systems. Valid CDL-B license with air brake and tanker endorsements. ASE Light/Heavy certification, NH Vehicle Inspection licenses, and Diesel aftertreatment certification.
