Senior Clinical Scientist / Clinical Trials Specialist

Band 8A – 37 Hours per week, Permanent

This post in Oncology Physics at Edinburgh Cancer Centre aims to support increased capacity and support for Clinical Trials in Radiotherapy as part of the South East of Scotland Cancer Research Network Radiotherapy Team (SESCRN Team 5). This is an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skills and establish this new role within Edinburgh Cancer Centre (ECC).

A key objective for radiotherapy in ECC is to expand our clinical and technical research activities and increase recruitment to radiotherapy clinical trials. The SESCRN Radiotherapy Team 5 includes members from Oncology Physics, Therapeutic Radiography, Clinical Oncology, Data Management, and Nursing. The team's scope includes:

  • Ensuring equity of access to radiotherapy trials
  • Increasing the number of radiotherapy trials we can open
  • Assessing capacity requirements for trial initiation
  • Providing input on how trials may impact service delivery
  • Encouraging in-house radiotherapy research and supporting innovative ideas

The purpose of this role is to provide physics leadership and management for new clinical trials, overseeing specific development and implementation projects. The postholder will serve as the physics contact for clinical trials, monitor and audit physics resources needed for trial operations, and ensure proper documentation.

Additional duties include routine service tasks such as complex treatment planning, dosimetry QA, commissioning of new techniques, R&D, and developing new techniques. Experience with Varian hardware and software is advantageous but full training will be provided.

Applicants should possess an honours degree in physics or a related subject, an accredited postgraduate degree, and be registered with the HCPC as a Clinical Scientist. If not already holding an RPA2000 Certificate of Competence as a Medical Physics Expert, support will be provided to attain it.

The Cancer Centre operates 7 Varian linacs (2 with ExacTrac Dynamic), 2 Philips Brilliance CTs with motion management, and uses Eclipse and Elements for treatment planning, with ARIA for oncology management. The centre provides Scotland’s National Stereotactic Service for benign intra-cranial lesions and participates actively in clinical trials, with research links to the University of Edinburgh.

Interviews are expected to occur in the week beginning 21/7/25.

For informal inquiries, contact Natalie McInally, Lead Clinical Scientist at natalie.mcinally@nhs.scot, or Paul McGrane, Head of Treatment Planning at paul.mcgrane@nhs.scot.

This role requires PVG Scheme membership. If not currently a member, an application must be made to Disclosure Scotland and approved before starting.

The term “Senior” indicates the level of experience and responsibility, not age. Applications from all ages are welcome, provided criteria are met.
