Job description

1st Class Diesel Mechanic


Purpose:

Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1st Class Diesel Mechanic to support shop operations in Norfolk, VA.


Job Description:


  • Overhaul and repair combustion powered heavy duty vehicles and heavy mobile equipment such as cranes and forklifts.

  • Repair work includes the repairing, overhauling, or rebuilding systems of the following:

    • Diesel and gasoline engines

    • Other types of internal combustion engines

    • Automatic and non-automatic transmissions

    • Heavy duty drive line systems

    • Hydraulic utility systems and controls



  • Trace and locate defects and causes of mechanical problems using a wide range of diagnostic and test equipment.

  • Determine the type and extent of necessary repairs.

  • Fit and install appropriate tolerances such parts as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders.

  • Make changes or modifications in accordance with specifications and guidelines.

  • Connects, meshes, aligns, and adjusts system elements to assure proper operation of the complete system or vehicle.

  • Field repairs as necessary.

  • Install, repair, maintain, test, and adjust fixed and semi-fixed industrial equipment and machinery such as cranes, pumps, engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machinery.

  • Plan and lay-out work from blueprints, diagrams, operational manuals, manufacturer's specifications, work orders, and other specifications.

  • Disassemble equipment using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.

  • Determine nature of repair and examine parts to detect imperfections with the use of rulers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments to determine changes in dimensional requirements.

  • Adjust functional parts of equipment and control instruments using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, and straightedges.

  • Make repairs by replacing, reworking, or refinishing worn or damaged parts.

  • Reassemble equipment and test performance.

  • Operation of equipment, preventative maintenance, diagnostic and repair work, and overhaul of minor and major building/utility systems and components.

  • Perform preventative maintenance and calibration of equipment at all levels.

  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.

  • Apply basic math, reading and communication skills.

  • Board ships via stairs, ladders, and gangways with tool bags and needed equipment.

  • Control cost in assigned area of responsibility.

  • Maintain equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level.

  • Provide mechanical maintenance information by answering questions and requests.

  • Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.

  • Controls downtime by informing production workers of routine preventive maintenance techniques and monitoring compliance.

  • Repair, maintain and troubleshoot the operating condition of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment in a production environment.

  • Perform all equipment modifications.

  • Lay out work for preparation of fabrication, assembly, etc., and carry out simple construction.

  • Blueprint and schematic reading.

  • Hands on experience with basic electronic and electrical principles (resistance, inductance, capacitance, impedance, et.) and basic circuit types (series, parallel, series-parallel, amplification, oscillation, etc.) of A.C. and D.C. systems.

  • Install and maintain electrical distribution and users on premises according to applicable law regarding license, etc....

  • Able to troubleshoot, repair, or order parts for the repair of any portable or stationary type of electrical, combustion, chemical, air pressure, or hydraulic powered tool or component used in or associated with shipbuilding with manufacturers reprints and literature provided.

  • Circuit testing, and troubleshooting, ability to use electrical and mechanical test equipment (volt-ohm meter, multi-meter, oscilloscope, signal generator, compression gauges, hydrometer, etc.).

  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator.


Qualifications:


  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least seven (7) years of experience in maintaining and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment systems.

  • Must have knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade.

  • Must be able to work effectively with others.

  • Must be a steady, reliable worker.

  • Must be able to comprehend and follow instructions.

  • Must be able to work independently to complete responsibilities.

  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.


Desired Qualifications:


  • Prefer the ability to obtain a DBIDS badge.

  • Prefer technical training.

  • Previous experience at Colonna's Shipyard highly preferred.


Travel Requirements:


  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.

  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.

  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods

  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.

  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.

  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.

  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.

  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation

  • Frequent use of respirator.

  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
