Job description
Overview

Tutoring assesses gaps in the childrens knowledge and provides sessions tailored to their needs and interests. Tutors meet the young person and build a relationship by engaging them in activities of interest. When the relationship is established, they assess strengths and weaknesses in Maths, English and Science and plan activities/work to support learning. Engagement varies by individual; progress is gradual and paced to the young person’s capacity and needs. A weekly report is required to provide feedback on engagement and what has been completed, submitted via the tutor portal.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver tutoring and mentoring sessions that build confidence, self-esteem and life skills, and act as a positive adult role model.
  • Engage in activities that promote mental health and life skills (e.g., walks, cooking, games, outings) and help the young person become a well‑rounded individual.
  • Support with Post 16 options, researching colleges and planning next steps for life.
  • Deliver tuition at the child’s home or local library; mentoring may begin at home and then move outside the home as the relationship develops.
  • Review the young person’s EHCP form when a vacancy is available to understand the reason they are out of school and plan appropriate outcomes for each tuition or mentoring session, deciding whether the vacancy is suitable.
  • On the first day, introduce yourself and the carer; in subsequent sessions, build the relationship by engaging in activities of interest and identify gaps in learning to plan creative, engaging lessons.
  • Handle cancellations by carers without impacting pay; adjustments are made for illness or appointments and missed hours can be caught up in other sessions or in half terms with carer agreement.
  • Complete physical timesheets weekly with carers and submit a weekly report for each young person detailing engagement, activities, next steps and concerns.
  • Understand that vacancies range from 1 to 15 hours per week across the week, typically during school hours, with some flexibility for more frequent sessions.
  • Many tutors/mentors undertake 2–3 sessions per day with different young people to meet hours and pay requirements.

Vacancies can be ongoing or booked through the academic year.
