Sturminster Newton High School is seeking a caring and enthusiastic 1:1 Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated support for a named child. You will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider staff to ensure the child feels safe, supported and included in all aspects of school life.

Salary: Grade 6, Scale Point 6-9: £19,636 - £20,592 per annum (subject to experience. Salary quoted is prior to the 2026 pay award being applied)*

Contract: Fixed term until 31.08.2027, 32.5 hours a week, 39 weeks a year (term time plus inset days) - This post is fixed-term and linked to funding currently allocated to support a pupil with additional needs. The contract will continue while the funding remains in place.

*The salary quoted reflects the annual salary for the position at the time of advertising. Payment will be made in equal monthly instalments and will be adjusted at the start of employment, and again if employment ends partway through the school year, to ensure the correct salary is paid for work completed during the academic year.

The successful candidate will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider staff to ensure the child feels safe, supported, and included in all aspects of school life.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide 1:1 support to a child, in line with their individual learning and care needs.
  • Support the child’s emotional, social, and academic development in the classroom and during other school activities.
  • Work closely with teaching staff and parents to implement and adapt learning strategies.
  • Contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Assist with record keeping and observations as required.

SAST will conduct online searches of shortlisted candidates. In line with KCSIE guidance, this will be part of safer recruitment checks, and the search will purely be based on whether an individual is suitable to work with children. As care must be taken to avoid unconscious bias and any risk of discrimination, a person who will not be on the appointment panel will conduct the searches and will only share information if and when findings are relevant and of concern.

Safeguarding responsibilities associated with this role may include engagement in regulatory activity, such as administering first aid or supporting an upset child. It will have contact with young people on a day-to-day basis. The successful candidate will have to meet the person specification and the post is subject to safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS check and Children’s Barred List check. The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020.
