Job description

Do you combine a passion for the outdoors with the ability to connect with young people on an individual level? Our Alternative Provision (AP) in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, is seeking a dedicated 1:1 Outdoor Education Teacher to inspire and re-engage students through tailored outdoor learning experiences. We welcome applications from both qualified teachers and experienced outdoor instructors/youth workers.

This unique role focuses on delivering personalised outdoor education programmes to students who benefit from a hands-on, alternative approach. You'll use the outdoors to build confidence, resilience, teamwork, and a love for learning, starting on 30th June 2025.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning and delivering bespoke 1:1 outdoor activities, adapting to individual student needs and interests.
  • Using outdoor challenges to teach core skills, build positive relationships, and improve emotional regulation.
  • Developing and implementing personalised learning plans (PLPs) focused on both practical skills and academic progress.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with students, many of whom have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs or SEND.
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of students during all activities.
  • Collaborating with the AP team to provide holistic support.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A genuine passion for outdoor pursuits and their educational benefits.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with vulnerable young people.
  • The ability to adapt activities and teaching methods to individual needs.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) OR significant experience in outdoor education/youth work, with relevant qualifications (e.g., Mountain Leader, Forest School Leader) and experience supporting students with SEMH/SEND.
