The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble invites applications for a position within the Instrument Control Service (SCI). You will join a team handling instrument electronics, performing wiring and cabling at the instrument site and in the laboratory.

The ILL is an international research facility at the forefront of neutron science and technology. Its High-Flux Nuclear Reactor delivers the world’s most intense neutron beams to a suite of over 40 scientific instruments . Every year, some 1800 international researchers visit the ILL to carry out cutting-edge experiments across a range of scientific disciplines, driving innovation in the fields of health, energy, the environment and quantum materials. The ILL is also involved in the production of radioisotopes for medical applications. The ILL employs over 500 staff from 25 different countries, in a diversity of careers and a multicultural and inclusive environment.

The ILL's Projects and Techniques Division (DPT) is responsible for the conception and implementation of the technical solutions required by the scientists responsible for ILL's instruments and by the neutron user community. The DPT's different services and laboratories also run a strong research and development programme, ensuring the ILL's front-runner position in the deployment of innovative neutron technologies. Its staff of around 150 people is composed mainly of engineers and technicians.

About the position

Working within the ILL’s Instrument Control Service (SCI), you will join a team responsible for instrument electronics. You will work closely with the person in charge of the electronics of each instrument, performing wiring and cabling work at the instrument site, as well as preparatory work in the laboratory.

Your tasks

• Perform wiring and cabling work on the instruments: laying cables, fitting sockets and connectors.
• Perform preparatory work in the laboratory prior to wiring/cabling work at the instrument site.
• Design and build customised electronics modules specifically for the SCI as required.
• Read, interpret and update wiring diagrams on a computer.
• Perform soldering with care and precision, in compliance with quality standards.

Desired profile

• You have at least a Level 3 qualification (NVQ, City and Guilds, apprenticeship) in electronics, electrical engineering or a related field.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting wiring diagrams.
• Excellent command of soldering techniques.
• You must have a meticulous approach to your work and an eye for detail in order to keep defects to an absolute minimum.
• Mechanical skills for producing small parts would be a plus.
