Context & Job description

The Electronics Unit within the Detector & Electronics Group of the Instrumentation Services and Development Division provides cutting‑edge development and support in control electronics for instrumentation across the ESRF experimental stations and accelerator complex.

As a Senior Electronics Engineer in the Electronics Unit, you will:

  • Develop and integrate FPGA-based control and data‑acquisition architectures;
  • Lead multidisciplinary development projects leveraging FPGA, and advanced digital and mixed‑signal electronics solutions;
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to push the boundaries of electronics for synchrotron radiation experiments instrumentation.

You will have the opportunity to work on exciting and high‑impact projects, including:

  • Development of the timing system for the sequencing and synchronisation of the accelerator complex using the White Rabbit technology;
  • Contribution to the design of a next‑generation Linear Accelerator within an international collaboration programme;
  • Participation in the design of control electronics for state‑of‑art experimental stations;
  • Implementation of high‑throughput data readout systems for X‑ray detectors.

We are looking for a motivated engineer with a passion for innovation in electronics and a desire to take ownership of challenging projects in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Expected profile
  • A higher university degree (Master or equivalent diploma offering 300 ECTS) in electronics or closely related area.
  • At least ten years of practical experience in the development of digital and analog electronic systems, including FPGA programming.
  • Proven expertise and hands‑on experience in FPGA‑based architectures for high‑performance projects, including high‑speed data processing and transmission.
  • Sound experience in design and prototyping of electronic boards and systems and the required development tools.
  • Experience in leading complex technical projects.
  • Strong background in the use of computing tools, including some basic programming skills for testing and operation of electronic instrumentation.
  • A genuine interest in working within a multidisciplinary and international environment, with strong interpersonal skills and team spirit.
  • Ability to abstract complex problems and apply critical thinking.
  • Autonomous, well‑organised and methodical in approach.
  • Good writing, presentation and technical documentation skills.
  • Project and time management skills are an asset.
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF).
Working conditions

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
