An international climate organization is seeking a highly motivated Science Officer for its Technical Support Unit in Paris. Qualifications

  • PhD in climate science and publications relevant to physical climate science.
  • Experience in scientific report writing and editing.
  • Proficient in oral and written English at academic publishing level.
  • Ability to plan, organize and execute complex multi-task workloads.
  • Proficient in oral and written English at the academic publishing level.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with international science and stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel internationally.
  • Experience with UN processes, IPCC would be an asset.

Responsabilités

  • Assist in the preparation and review of the IPCC Working Group I assessment.

The position is locatedin the Paris area, in Gif-sur-Yvette (France).

TheIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

TheIPCC was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEnvironment) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988 to providepolicymakers with rigorous, transparent, and objective scientific assessmentson climate change, its implications and potential future risks, as well as toput forward adaptation and mitigation options. The IPCC is now undertaking itsSeventh Assessment (AR7) cycle. The IPCC Working Group I (WGI) assesses thephysical science underpinning past, present, and future climate change. The WGITechnical Support Unit (TSU) provides scientific, technical, operational andcommunications support that underpin and implement the WGI assessment.

TheTechnical Support Unit (TSU)

TheTSU works at the unique IPCC interface between science and policy in theprovision of the climate knowledge and information that is relevant for policyneeds and decision making. The team is responsible for facilitating andimplementing the assessment process undertaken by the author teams and overseenby the WGI Bureau. We are seeking someone who is highly motivated to join ateam that spans different areas of expertise including climate sciences(observations, climate processes, global and regional climate modeling), visualdesign and communication, digital information development and management, andinternational project management. The team is hosted by UniversitéParis-Saclay and located in the facilities of Ecole normale supérieure (ENS)Paris-Saclay in the Paris area.

JobDescription

TheScience Officer will work closely with the IPCC Working Group I Bureau and theAuthors and will report to the Science Coordinator. He/She/They will assist inthe preparation, review, and completion of the IPCC Working Group I assessmentand play a key role in ensuring the scientific integrity and quality of thereport. He/She/They will support the planning, conducting, and reporting forthe meetings and sessions organized by Working Group I and contribute to thescientific aspects of these meetings and sessions to facilitate informeddecision-making. The Science Officer will contribute to the development andimplementation of scientific plans related to the activities and products ofthe Working Group I, assist in the reporting process for the scientificoutcomes of meetings, sessions, and other relevant activities. He/She/They willprovide scientific support in the development of outreach materials related tothe activities of the Working Group I and contribute to the creation ofmaterials that effectively communicate scientific findings to variousstakeholders.

Qualifications
  • PhD in climate science and scientific publicationswith relevance to physical climate science; expertise in the terrestrialbiosphere and/or carbon cycle would be an asset;
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural andmulti-disciplinary team;
  • Experience in scientific report writing and editing;
  • Ability to plan, organize and execute complexmulti-task workloads;
  • Proficient in oral and written English at the academicpublishing level;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills andcapability to interact with international science and stakeholder community;
  • Stress-resistance and ability to work precisely andeffectively under time constraints;
  • Willingnessto travel internationally;
  • Experience working with UN processes, in particularthe IPCC, would be an asset.

Theposition is a fixed term contract from Université Paris-Saclay for 2 years witha possibility of extension within the duration of the IPCC 7 th Assessment Cycle. The starting date would be as soon as possible.
