Résumé du poste

France-BioImaging, hosting the ICAR team at LIRMM in Montpellier, invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher to design and integrate an open-source adaptive light microscope for real-time AI–driven feedback.

The candidate will design, assemble and calibrate a light-sheet based system, integrate dual-objective imaging, interface hardware with software, and contribute to open-source documentation and dissemination. Starting May 1, 2026 with a 4-year contract.

Qualifications

  • PhD in optics, physics, bioengineering, instrumentation, robotics, or related field required.
  • Strong experience in optical microscopy and experimental instrumentation.
  • Good theoretical understanding of physical optics and light-matter interaction.
  • Keenness to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Experience with light-sheet microscopy and open hardware platforms is a plus.

Responsabilités

  • Design and assemble an open-source adaptive light microscope, based around a light-sheet excitation architecture.
  • Integrate dual-objective, multiscale imaging configurations.
  • Implement motorized and piezo-controlled opto-mechanical systems for precise alignment and calibration.
  • Interface hardware with real-time acquisition and control software.

Position Information

MicroscopIA is an interdisciplinary project aiming to build an open hardware microscope integrating 3D+t adaptive imaging with real-time AI driven feedback.

To join this project, the ICAR team, from LIRMM laboratory, is recruiting a post-doctoral researcher to play a central role in the design, construction and integration of the microscope hardware.

Missions
  • Design and assemble an open-source adaptive light microscope, based around a light-sheet excitation architecture;
  • Integrate dual-objective, multiscale imaging configurations;
  • Implement motorized and piezo-controlled opto-mechanical systems for precise alignment and calibration;
  • Interface hardware with real-time acquisition and control software;
  • Contribute to automated calibration, adaptive acquisition, and hardware–AI feedback loops;
  • Participate in open-source hardware documentation and scientific dissemination.
Profile
  • PhD in optics, physics, bioengineering, instrumentation, robotics, or related fields;
  • Strong experience in optical microscopy and experimental instrumentation;
  • Good theoretical understanding of physical optics and light-matter interaction principles;
  • Keenness to work in an interdisciplinary environment.

Plus: Experience with light-sheet microscopy, open hardware platforms (OpenSPIM, µManager), wavefront shaping and/or adaptive optics, CAD/mechanical design, nD and high throughput data I/O.

General information
  • Location: Montpellier, France
  • Contract: Postdoctoral position – 4 years (1 year + 3-year renewal)
  • Starting date: May 1st, 2026
  • Apply: Send a CV, a short text describing how you would use your current skills to attack the microscope development project, and contact details for 1-2 referees, to the contacts listed above.
