Under the general direction of the Associate Dean of Teaching & Learning Innovations, the librarian is the primary librarian on the Vernon Campus, leading and participating in research help services, departmental instruction services and teaching and learning initiatives. The librarian coordinates and leads the Library’s engagement with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research, scholarship, and teaching and learning, and contributes to the College’s digital transformation initiatives. Departmental AI initiatives may include programming related to critical AI literacies, ethical and responsible use of AI technologies, and the development of AI-focused services and resources. The librarian participates in campus and College-wide AI initiatives and plays a key role in shaping how educators, students, and staff engage with AI in research and library services. The librarian serves as a key institutional contact on relevant AI research tools, methods, and responsible use, and supports the College community in integrating AI in ways that are technically sound, ethically grounded, and aligned with institutional values. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the evolving AI landscape, an interest in machine learning or natural language processing, and a commitment to supporting responsible AI use across the College. The librarian is responsible for supervising public services staff on the Vernon campus, and represents the Library while working with campus administrators and support units and participates in campus committees. The librarian works with the Campus Library Coordinator to oversee front-line library operations on the Vernon Campus, to enhance public services and the learner experience, and provides input on department-wide outreach and space planning initiatives. The librarian liaises with academic departments and service areas as appropriate, to build relationships, provide research and instruction support and to develop students’ academic skills related to academic integrity, research, and information, digital, and AI literacies. Other duties include research help services, collection development, professional development, service, and may include scholarly activity.
Functions and Duties
- Leads library public services (research help, instruction, borrower services, etc.) on the Vernon campus
- Supervises public services staff on the Vernon campus, including training and mentoring staff, overseeing staff performance reviews, and assisting with staff scheduling
- Provides consultations, training, and outreach to educators, researchers, students, and staff to use AI tools responsibly, ethically, and effectively, supporting the independent use of AI research tools and technologies
- Develops and promotes guidance on ethical and responsible AI use, including best practices and guidance on the ethical integration and attribution of AI-generated content, compliance with institutional, governmental, and disciplinary standards and policies, and AI implementations that highlight algorithmic transparency and accountability
- Guides educators and staff on applying the use of AI in various research contexts, such as data analysis, machine learning, and natural language processing
- Collaborates with educators and staff to assess and integrate AI tools and methodologies into research projects, including the use of AI for data management, text and data mining, and predictive analytics
- Assesses potentially beneficial AI tools for the Library’s operations and services and disseminates current information on the use of AI for library and information services and teaching and learning initiatives, in collaboration with the Digital Systems & Services Librarian
- Designs, delivers, and assesses online and in-person library instruction and learning experiences using a variety of instructional methods, with a focus on building information, digital, and AI literacy, research skills, and academic skills related to academic integrity, plagiarism, citation practices, and fostering the thoughtful and responsible use of GenAI in curricular and co-curricular contexts
- Develops, curates, and maintains instructional and learning resources such as research guides, tutorials, and multimedia materials, to support independent and guided learning related to research, information and digital literacy, academic integrity, plagiarism, citation, and the use of AI tools
- Liaises with academic departments or service areas as appropriate, to build relationships, deliver instruction, provide research support, conduct library resource assessments, contribute to program review/accreditation reports, and develop and maintain collections that meet learner and educator needs
- Collaborates with educators, educational developers, and program areas to embed information literacy instruction and research competencies into course and program design, supporting open, accessible, and ethically grounded learning practices
- Collaborates with campus partners including, but not limited to, academic portfolios, IT Services, and the Teaching and Learning area, to support shared goals around research innovation and AI, and conduct outreach and build relationships with students and staff on their evolving needs related to AI technologies
- Selects and evaluates print and electronic resources to support curricular and professional development needs, in collaboration with the Collections and Metadata Librarian, the Digital Systems & Services Librarian, the Library Department, and academic departmental representatives
- Collaborates with librarians to apply evidence-informed approaches to assess and improve library programs and instructional initiatives and activities
- Provides in-depth research consultations and public service support to students, staff, and educators, collaborating closely with other librarians to deliver integrated, learner-centred services
- Contributes to planning and development of department and portfolio policies and procedures by participating in library and TLI portfolio committees and meetings
- Supports campus administrators, support units and campus committees with events, orientations, and communications, with a focus on promoting library resources, services, and spaces, in collaboration with librarians and staff
- Actively integrates principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility into services, instruction, and collections
- Engages in professional development activity intended to maintain awareness of current and emerging trends in librarianship, professional competencies, and teaching and learning practices
- Engages in service to the College, the profession, and/or relevant community services
- If requested and approved, may engage in scholarly activity, which may include scholarship, research and creative activity
- Performs other related Librarian duties as assigned
Education and Experience
Minimum qualification is a degree from an accredited Master’s program in library and information studies
Desirable Experience:
- Recent relevant professional library experience in an academic library, including experience in the provision of information literacy instruction and research help services, or acceptable equivalent. Experience with teaching and leading library programming.
- Familiarity with the ethical, legal, and social implications of AI, particularly in higher education or research contexts.
- Supervisory experience is preferred
- Collection development experience is preferred
- Experience supporting researchers, educators, or students in the application of AI tools and platforms in an academic library setting is preferred.
- Experience in training and fine-tuning small or large language models (SLMs/LLMs) to support discipline-specific learning, research, and information literacy needs in post-secondary education considered an asset
Some evening and weekend work may be required
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of Artificial Intelligence, including GenAI systems and tools, ethical, legal, intellectual property, and social implications of use, academic integrity challenges, natural language processing or machine learning, with application to library, research services, and public contexts
- Ability to translate complex concepts related to Artificial Intelligence into accessible learning experiences
- Familiar with, and supportive of, new and emerging technologies related to library services and higher education
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with an ability to convey technical topics to diverse audiences with varying levels of knowledge
- Ability to foster engagement and communication among students and educators
- Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with people of diverse educational and sociocultural backgrounds, including International Students and English Language Learners
- Ability to work independently and to collaborate with diverse colleagues and educators in a team-based environment
- Strong organizational skills in managing multiple activities and working under time constraints
- Ability to learn and apply new skills and evidence of ongoing self-directed learning
- Familiar with the latest trends and best practices in academic library outreach and engagement practices
- Demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in operational work, with an interest in supporting social justice and reconciliation initiatives
- Demonstrate effective teaching and presentation skills

Schedule 35 hours/week — Monday through Friday. Some evenings and weekend work may be required from time to time.
Annual Salary/Hourly Rate: Salary range $71,846 to $115,129 with normal starting salary between $78,872 and $85,897 annually, dependent on relevant education and experience
