Banfield is seeking a Shift Lead to perform the duties of a CSC and veterinary assistant while providing leadership across all shifts. You will support the Practice Manager and Chief of Staff to ensure smooth operations, high-quality care, and profitability.

You will recruit, supervise, and mentor paraprofessional staff; triage treatment boards; coordinate client and patient flow; and maintain accurate medical records and compliant procedures.

Qualifications

  • Leadership and supervisory capabilities required.
  • Two years of relevant experience in veterinary or medical field.
  • Medical terminology training preferred.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE AND FUNCTION

The primary purpose of the Shift Lead is to perform the duties of a CSC and/or veterinary assistant/technician, while providing continuity and operational support across all shifts. The Shift Lead ensures the hospital always has leadership onsite to support associates, clients, and to maximize productivity and profitability. This position works with the Practice Manager and/or Chief of Staff to facilitate effective communication with clients, associates, field leadership, central team support, and Petsmart.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

Paraprofessional Responsibilities (approximately 80% of time):

  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
  • Actively recruit new clients by promoting hospital services.
  • Manage client and pet routing to ensure superior care and maximum productivity.
  • Maximize the number of pets seen by the hospital team through efficient operations.
  • Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all times – welcoming clients and pets, teaching care, preparing procedures, monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets as allowed.
  • Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, and hospital services.
  • Assist incoming clients with documentation, data entry, collar/tag identification, and prompt service.
  • Assist outgoing clients with instructions, invoices, prescription dispensing, retail sales, and future appointments.
  • Manage finances by maintaining accurate balances and following opening/closing procedures.
  • Act as extra support for veterinarians and technicians to ensure quality care and maximize productivity.
  • Maintain complete and accurate medical charts.
  • Ensure safety of pets, clients, and associates using proper restraining techniques and clean, sterile treatment areas.

Leadership Responsibilities (approximately 20% of time):

  • Assist Practice Manager in developing an efficient, productive hospital team that delivers high-quality care.
  • Support labor management by adjusting paraprofessional schedules on a shift‑by‑shift basis.
  • Assist in selecting, training, and supervising paraprofessional staff.
  • Provide exemplary client service and educate clients about plans and services.
  • Create an environment that engages associates, fostering a positive team culture.
  • Ensure clear communication among associates, clients, hospital leadership, and central support.
  • Enforce Banfield dress and grooming guidelines.
  • Prepare surgical equipment and allocate cases to VAs, clarifying responsibilities.
  • Tri‑age the treatment board, assist with case transfers and referrals.
  • Identify bottlenecks and formulate solutions to streamline medical operations.
  • Collaborate with field leadership on client resolution decisions and invoice adjustments.
  • Train and mentor new paraprofessional associates.
  • Perform quality checks of medical records, medications, regulatory documents, and hospital cleanliness.
  • Address equipment issues and assist with inventory management.
  • Complete other job duties as assigned.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Confident interaction with pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
  • Work may exceed 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings.
  • Moderately high noise level.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Good hand‑eye coordination and visual acuity for keyboard use and equipment operation.
  • Exposure to pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING
  • Associate’s degree or veterinary technician certification/licensure preferred.
  • Two years of relevant experience required; six months at Banfield preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Medical background (veterinary technician, human healthcare, pharmaceutical, etc.) with medical terminology training preferred.
PAY RANGE

Hourly: $16.65 – $21.28. The specific rate is based on experience, skill level, and education and may vary by location or applicable minimum wage laws.
