The role involves overseeing the safe operation and maintenance of Engine Room equipment, managing personnel, and responding to emergencies. Qualifications

Background
  • The Engine Room Supervisor will exhibit good leadership, supervisory and safety behaviors and will specifically ensure that all aspects of Engine Room operation and maintenance are carried out safely, through careful delegation and control of responsibilities.
Authority
  • The Engine Room Supervisor is specifically responsible for the operation and maintenance of Engine Room equipment and systems and the competence of those under immediate supervision.
Immediate Subordinates
  • Assistant Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Operators, visitors, vendor technicians, and sub‑contractors.
Responsibilities & Standards
  • 1) Engine Room Equipment and Systems and Utilities Operation and Maintenance
  • 1 Prepare Engine Room Plant and Systems for start‑up, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER.
  • 2 Start and Monitor Engine Room Plant and Systems, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER.
  • 3 Prepare and Shut‑down Engine Room Plant and Systems, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER.
  • 4 Isolate and reinstate Engine Room Plant and for Maintenance, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER.
  • 2) Manage And Supervise Effectively
  • 1 Establish effective relationships with colleagues and subordinates.
  • 2 Establish scope of work clearly (briefings, toolbox talks, presentations).
  • 3 Plan and control use of resources effectively. (Personnel, time, materials, transport, IT).
  • 4 Use of communication skills shows leadership (oral, teambuilding, recording, noting, handover, analyzing).
  • 5 Promote training and competency assurance throughout the department in line with Company goals for the Unit.
  • 6 Encourage and support all department personnel to achieve training and competency targets and plan for appropriate time allocation for this area of work.
  • 7 Objective and consistent in assessment of subordinates using competence assessment system.
  • 8 Make recommendations and improvements in working practices for greater safety, efficiency and profitability.
  • 9 Ensure all Maintenance (Routine and breakdown) is completed and recorded accurately and clearly.
  • 10 Ensure all plant and machinery complies with Class and Inspections.
  • 3) Contribute To Control Of Critical Situations And Respond To Emergencies
  • 1 Developing critical situations (operational, weather, equipment failure, leaks, fires personnel etc.) are identified and logged for later analysis.
  • 2 Positive action is taken to limit escalation and to maintain control using applied policies or procedures or initiative.
  • 3 External agencies as appropriate are alerted in good time.
  • 4) Monitor and Maintain Pollution Control Measures
  • 1 Sample and check that controlled discharges from area of responsibility to the environment are within prescribed limits.
  • 2 Identify and halt unplanned discharges where possible, and reported immediately according to policy, procedure and regulation.
  • 3 Equipment, waste or other materials for disposal are dealt with according to the correct procedure.
  • 4 Resources such as PPE materials tools and spares are not wasted or used inefficiently.
  • 5) Emergency Response
  • 1 Carry Out Emergency Response role (See Station Bill).
  • 2 Demonstrate competence in Emergency Response drills and exercises.

Pre‑hire Qualifications and Experience
  • STCW III/2 Chief Engineer Officer on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000 kW propulsion power or more (Steam and Motor endorsement preferred), (DCE for Petroleum/Gas as appropriate).
  • Experience as Chief Engineer on VLCC preferred and at least 2 years as 1st Engineer.
  • Experience and knowledge of hydrocarbon processing and utility systems desirable.
  • Computer literate in Management System ‘Office’ software packages and experienced on maintenance management systems.
  • Experience in Permit to Work Systems.
  • Proficiency in English at a minimum of B1 level according to the CEFR international standard.
  • Medically fit according to The Company GEMS Instruction Health Requirements to Work Offshore.
