Position offers a Monday–Friday schedule with potential on-call after hours. A high school diploma or GED and two years of relevant repair experience are required, with EPA certifications as applicable. Hybrid telework eligibility is noted per policy.

  • EPA Type I/II/III or Universal technician certification may be required.

Responsabilités

  • Execute comprehensive body repairs, including dent removal, surface filling, and mounting holes for equipment.
  • Restore filing cabinets and out-of-service vehicles including hole repair, light bar removal, dents and repainting.
  • Replace glass on active patrol vehicles and address leaks as needed.
  • Detail active vehicles with sanding, buffing and decaling.
  • Maintain paint shop cleanliness and equipment.

Description of Work

The NC State Highway Patrol is recruiting for an Auto Body Mechanic. Are you an experienced mechanic ready for hands-on vehicle repairs? Join our team and play a key role in keeping our operations running smoothly.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This position is deemed eligible for hybrid telework under SHP’s Telework Policy.

Recruiting Range: $39,244 - $54,000 Salary Grade NC 08

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute comprehensive body repairs, including dent removal, surface filling, and the restoration of mounting holes for specialized equipment (e.g., antennas and emergency lighting).
  • Restore filing cabinets and out-of-service vehicles to include but not limited to hole repair, light bar removal, dents, decal removal, rubber bumper covers, and repainting.
  • Replacement of glass on active patrol vehicles (windshields, damaged glass, water leaks, etc.).
  • Completing the detailing of active vehicles including sanding, buffing, and re-decaling.
  • Maintain paint shop cleanliness including shop tools and equipment.
Position/Physical Requirements

Monday‑Friday 8:00AM‑5:00PM. This position may require on‑call availability after regular business hours (e.g., nights, weekends).

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year‑for‑year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary special qualifications may require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Management Preferences (Optional)
  • Ability to perform several widely varying and diverse assignments that require in-depth knowledge of the design of automotive bodies and related parts and of the methods, tools, and equipment used in their repair or replacement.
  • Working knowledge of the strength and malleability of metals.
  • Working knowledge of the use of a MIG welder in repair or replacement of damaged body panels.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex vehicle repairs using the proper tools, resources, equipment, and training.
  • Ability to read and comprehend repair manuals.
