Position Description

The McGill University Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is currently inviting applications for a full‑time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical). This will be a three‑year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal in the province of Quebec. Job Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. They will be expected to demonstrate aptitude and interest in pursuing academic studies (clinical and/or basic research), and should also demonstrate interest in telehealth and aboriginal health. The incumbent will be called upon to take a leading role in future departmental projects such as telemedicine and advanced technical training techniques.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., clinical duties, research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). The incumbent will be expected to develop an innovative independent research program to pursue scholarly activities, ideally externally funded. Clinical resources, allocation of operating time, and infrastructure support will be commensurate with needs.

McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

• Hold, or be eligible for, immediate licensure as an ophthalmologist in the province of Quebec;
• Have completed advanced training (e.g., subspecialty fellowship and/or advanced degree(s) such as an MPH, or equivalent);
• Have expertise in research and demonstrated collaboration in conducting clinical studies;
• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.

• Demonstrated Commitment to Teaching: A strong dedication to resident and fellow education, with an ability to contribute meaningfully to both clinical and academic teaching programs;
• Telemedicine and Remote Clinical Care: Oversee implementation and expansion of tele‑ophthalmology services for remote diagnosis, follow‑up, and triage. Develop protocols and workflows that integrate virtual tools with in‑person care in Indigenous regions;
• Institutional Engagement: A willingness and ability to contribute to broader institutional goals through active participation in both academic and administrative initiatives;
• Research and Innovation: High interest in conducting applied research in Indigenous ocular health, focusing on access, outcomes, and epidemiology of vision disorders.
