Job summary

Shift Technology is seeking an Artificial Intelligence Researcher to join the Agentic Claims squad and help develop claim handling agents that support claim handlers and improve the insured experience.

You will drive Generative AI and agentic research, design AI agents for end-to-end insurance workflows, and collaborate with product, engineering, and data teams to deploy robust systems at scale.

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science, AI, ML, or related field.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and deploying AI systems.
• Experience with Generative AI and LLM-based architectures.
• Proficiency with prompt engineering, RAG pipelines, tool-augmented agents, and evaluation.
• Comfort using coding agents in daily work.
• Proficient in Python and modern AI frameworks.
• Business fluency in English; French is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Stay at the forefront of Generative AI and Agentic AI, including LLMs and tool-augmented agents.
• Design, prototype, and evaluate specialized AI agents for end-to-end insurance workflows.
• Translate business problems into robust agentic systems and integrate tools and memory strategies.
• Own AI systems from problem formulation to production deployment and monitoring.
• Contribute to internal frameworks, benchmarks, and tooling to accelerate experimentation.

• The Research team plays a key role in Shift’s strategy, developing AI technologies used by insurers and their clients worldwide. We design, evaluate, and industrialize cutting-edge AI systems, with a strong focus on Generative AI and agentic architectures.
• We tackle complex real-world insurance challenges such as fraud detection, liability analysis, subrogation opportunity detection, and decision support across highly heterogeneous and unstructured data including documents, free text, images, and structured claim data.
• Our ambition is to build reliable, production-grade AI systems that can reason over evidence, using tools and skills, and operate safely within critical business workflows.
• As an Artificial Intelligence Researcher, you will join the “Agentic Claims” squad dedicated to developing claim handling agents. These systems support claim handlers by automating tasks and processes, simplify the daily work of claim handlers, and ultimately enhance the experience of the insured.

Your role

• Stay at the forefront of Generative AI and Agentic AI, including LLMs, multimodal models, tool-augmented agents and agentic workflows.
• Design, prototype, and rigorously evaluate specialized AI agents tailored to end-to-end insurance workflows.
• Translate business problems into robust agentic systems, including task decomposition, context and prompt design, tool integration, memory strategies, and advanced evaluation methodologies.
• Take ownership of AI systems from problem formulation and benchmarking to production deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Contribute to internal frameworks, benchmarks, and shared tooling to accelerate experimentation and industrialization of agentic workflows.
• Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and data teams to ensure scalability and measurable business impact.

You've got what it takes if

• You hold a PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• You have 3+ years of hands‑on experience designing and deploying AI systems, with strong exposure to Generative AI and LLM‑based architectures.
• You have practical experience with prompt engineering, RAG pipelines, tool‑augmented agents, and systematic evaluation of AI systems.
• You are comfortable using coding agents such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or Codex in your daily work
• You are proficient in Python and modern AI frameworks (Microsoft Agent Framework, OpenAI Agents SDK, LangGraph)
• You are autonomous, rigorous, and motivated by solving complex, high‑impact real‑world problems.
• You are business fluent in English. We are an international company with offices in many countries and 50+ nationalities, the Shift working language is English.
• Fluency in French is a significant advantage.

Nice to have

• Experience developing and deploying AI agents in production environments.
• Experience with multimodal models or AI‑based document understanding.
• Proficiency in C#.
• Experience in the insurance industry.
• While this position offers full remote flexibility across France, proximity to the Paris region is a distinct advantage.
