The Faculty of Built Environment (BEN ) at Tampere University has an open position for a University lecturerstarting in autumn 2025. The position is in the civil engineering department and the field of position is geotechnics.
The Faculty of Built Environment is a respected, international, and innovative work community. The faculty's research and teaching activities interact with other participants in the field. Sustainable construction and community are overarching themes in our education. The civil engineering unit trains high-level professionals in the construction industry and conducts research on the built environment.
In the faculty, we conduct high-level scientific and applied research in the fields of architecture and civil engineering and provide the highest level of education related to these research areas. We form a unique interaction and innovation environment, offering opportunities for multidisciplinary education and research initiatives in the built environment. Our goal is to be a national leader in built environment research and education issues and to be internationally visible and respected in our areas of strength, acting as a partner and collaborator.
The Terra Research Center at Tampere University, established in 2020, continues the work of the former research group on Soil, Earth, and Railway Structures in the fields of foundation engineering and of infrastructure research and education. The center employs around 40 part-time and full-time staff, focusing on geotechnics, earth structures, railway structures, digitalization of infrastructure, and laboratory and measurement services.
The mission of Terra Research Center is to promote the realization of a functional, safe, and sustainable living environment through high-quality research and education. The center develops lifecycle economic infrastructure in close collaboration with industry stakeholders.
Job Description
The duties of the university lecturer position include responsibility for courses related to Finnish ground conditions, soil mechanics, geotechnical design, and foundation engineering structures, as well as participation in the planning of study modules dealing with infrastructures and geotechnical engineering. In addition, the work includes research and supervision of theses related to the aforementioned topics.
Successful performance in the position requires knowledge of Finnish ground and climate conditions, strong theoretical knowledge of soil mechanics, and proficiency in geotechnical calculation and modeling methods. Furthermore, the selected candidate must be familiar with the European geotechnical design system and have experience in applying it to the practical design of foundation engineering structures.

The position will be filled full-time and on a permanent basis. The appointment is expected to commence in the autumn 2025 as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees.
The salary will be based on the job demand and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System . The position of University Lecturer is placed on the job demand level 6.
