We invite applications for a faculty position in the field of Medical Technology and Biotechnology at the Tampere University Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET).

Position: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor in the field of Medical Technology and Biotechnology.

About MET

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high-quality research and education in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS).

Job description

We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a track record of internationally competitive research in medical technology and/or biotechnology. We welcome applicants with a focus on neuroscience and/or eye research aligned with MET research interests.

You are expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in your topic area at the highest level, actively collaborate with local, national and global research partners, clinical stakeholders and industry, secure substantial external funding, and contribute to degree education. The position will be placed in one of the three basic science units at MET, determined by the researcher’s profile and interests.

  • BIO unit: fundamental cellular processes and immunology; molecular genetics, biophysics, biochemistry, systems and cell biology.
  • MEDI unit: genome-wide methods, computational approaches and experimental models to understand mechanisms of disease (e.g., celiac disease and cancer).
  • TECH unit: interdisciplinary research in cell technologies for tissue and disease states (eye, heart, brain), biomaterials, biomedical micro- and nanotechnologies, health informatics, bioimaging, biophysics, biosensors and body-on-chip technologies.
Requirements

You should hold an applicable doctoral degree and postdoctoral training in a relevant area for pursuing a tenure-track career in medical technology and biotechnology. Teaching experience is considered favorable.

For the Assistant Professor position, we require:

  • Ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential for high international excellence,
  • Teaching skills to perform duties of the position,
  • Evidence and track record of potential to apply for external research funding.

For the Associate Professor position, we require:

  • Track record of independent scholarly activity,
  • Teaching skills to perform duties of the position,
  • Ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding,
  • Track record of international scholarly activity.

For the Professor position, we require:

  • High-level scholarly expertise including a track record of international activity,
  • Experience leading scientific research,
  • Ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction,
  • Track record of external research funding,
  • Experience with teaching and supervision of PhD and undergraduate students.

The position requires good English communication skills. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after appointment for management of administrative responsibilities and societal impact. Language studies support is offered.

We offer

Initial appointments are five years for Assistant Professor and Associate Professor on tenure-track; successful performance evaluation can lead to permanent status. A substantial startup package is provided, with support to establish an internationally competitive research program. Full professors will have a permanent appointment from the outset.

Salary levels align with the Finnish University Salary System. Typical starting salaries: Assistant Professor 4,400–5,000 EUR/month; Associate Professor 5,100–5,800 EUR/month; Professor 5,900–6,900 EUR/month; higher salaries may be agreed based on experience and performance. A six-month trial period applies. Tampere University offers competitive benefits and a range of support during the five-year period and beyond, including access to research infrastructure and facilities.

Starting date and working environment
