We are seeking a Research Trainee to join our Energy Transition team for next summer. Join us and make an impact!

As a Research Trainee, your main responsibilities will include updating and extending the documentation and wiki pages of the Backbone energy system model developed by VTT. You will support our users with current information about our energy system models and their features, directly contributing to our goal of developing top-tier open-source energy system models.

Our Energy Transition team, part of the broader Energy research area, supports decision-making through interdisciplinary analysis of technical and social change. Our mission is to address global challenges in climate change, environment, and social well-being by analyzing future systems involving hydrogen, electrification, CCSU, power systems, and digital solutions supporting a sustainable energy transition.

As a Research Trainee, you will:

• Enhance the documentation of our Backbone energy system model (https://gitlab.vtt.fi/backbone/backbone/)
• Create new content for the Backbone wiki regarding model features (https://gitlab.vtt.fi/backbone/backbone/-/wikis/home)
• Collaborate with experienced energy system modelers

Who are we looking for?

• A motivated student with relevant education in software documentation and energy system modeling
• Experience with GAMS is beneficial but not required
• Experience with AI coding tools for code documentation is highly preferred
• Excellent English skills (reading and writing)

All VTT summer traineeships are paid, with salaries based on study credits: €2600-2800/month for Master’s students and €2100-2400/month for Bachelor’s students.
