Job summary

Aiven is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Database Operations team to keep PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Valkey services stable, automated, and scalable. You’ll contribute to code, participate in reviews, and drive automation across production systems.

You'll work primarily with Python on a Linux stack, mentor others, and tackle performance, reliability, and security challenges in a global environment. The role emphasizes automation and reducing repetitive manual work.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, or Valkey/Redis.
• Excellent Python development skills.
• Experience with infrastructure automation and DevOps in production.
• Backup solutions and strategies knowledge.
• Advanced Linux OS understanding.
• Fluency in English, both spoken and written.

The role: We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Database Operations team — a cross‑cutting team that keeps Aiven’s database services (PostgreSQL, Valkey, and MySQL) stable, automated, and running efficiently at scale. Our philosophy is to automate everything and to avoid repetitive manual work in everything we do. Our own backend systems are mostly implemented in Python with bits of Java, Go and C.

What You’ll Do

• Write high‑quality, maintainable code and release quality features.
• Participate in technical discussions and perform PR reviews.
• Contribute to technical planning and backlog management.
• Help investigate and resolve customer issues.
• Mentor and empower other engineers.
• Automate processes to eliminate repetitive manual work.
• Develop and improve the scalability, reliability, and operational quality of our PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Valkey services.

What We’re Looking For

Must Have

• Excellent development skills in Python.
• 5+ years of experience working with one of these databases - PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Valkey/Redis, or similar.
• Experience with infrastructure automation and DevOps practices in production environments.
• Experience with backup solutions and backup strategies.
• Advanced understanding of Linux OS.
• Experience with automated testing.
• Distributed systems knowledge.
• Experience with performance improvements, bug fixes, and security vulnerability resolution.
• Fluency in English, verbal and written.

Nice to Have

• Good understanding of security (software, networking).
• Experience in cloud DBAAS production environments.
