The University of Jyväskylä invites applications for the Senior Lecturer position in Accelerator-Based Materials Physics Research. This permanent position includes research leadership, teaching responsibilities, and collaboration across research groups. Candidates should possess a Doctoral Degree, with proven experience in related fields. A vibrant community and excellent living standards in Jyväskylä enhance the experience.
The JYU is a nationally and internationally significant research university and an expert on education that focuses on human and natural sciences.
The Department of Physics within the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of Senior Lecturer in Accelerator-Based Materials Physics Research. The position should be filled by November 1st, 2025, or according to agreement, on a permanent basis.
The position is located within the Accelerator-Based Materials Physics Research group operating at the Accelerator Laboratory and Nanoscience Center of the University of Jyväskylä. The group investigates interactions between energetic ions and materials, develops detectors, data acquisition systems and analysis software, and furthermore applies ion beam techniques for the characterization of materials and thin films. In addition to ion beam-based research using the 1.7MV Pelletron and K130 cyclotron accelerators, the group conducts thin film research in the cleanrooms of the Nanoscience Center, in particular related to atomic layer deposition (ALD). By the end of 2026 the Pelletron accelerator will be replaced by a 3 MV Tandetron accelerator. This recruitment will strengthen the research group which consists of one Professor, one Staff Scientist, one Senior Researcher (temporary position), one Post-Doctoral researcher and five Doctoral Researchers.
The selected candidate is expected to actively participate in the leadership, development, and research activities of the Accelerator-Based Materials Physics Research group. Emphasis is placed on fostering interdisciplinary collaboration with other research groups and external stakeholders. The candidate is also expected to contribute actively to the teaching programs of the Department of Physics and the upcoming program in Technology for Safety and Risk Management, including supervision of theses at all levels.
We require a Doctoral Degree in a relevant field, teaching and supervision experience, along with a deep understanding of ion–material interactions and practical expertise in experimental techniques (primarily ion beam analysis and atomic layer deposition). In addition, we value familiarity with Tandem accelerators, ion sources and techniques, as the research group is largely responsible for maintaining and servicing its own research equipment. Experience in neutron-based research, as well as computational methods related to ion–material interactions, ion beam analysis, and neutron applications, will be considered an asset. Previous experience in research leadership, industry collaboration, and project coordination is also considered an advantage.
The qualifications and language requirements for the position of Senior Lecturer are defined in theUniversity of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines . Proficiency in English and the ability to teach in English are considered an advantage. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.
