Job summary

Thomas Thor in Helsinki invites a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to contribute to an innovative heat-only Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project. You will design and develop electrical systems to ensure safe, reliable plant operation and contribute across the full project lifecycle from concept through commissioning.

You will work with multidisciplinary teams, manage design documentation, perform circuit studies, and ensure compliance with IEC/EN standards and nuclear codes.

Qualifications

  • Must hold MSc or BSc in Electrical Engineering.
  • 8+ years in electrical engineering for industrial projects.
  • Strong knowledge of MV/LV power distribution.
  • Experience with electrical design documentation and standards.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Define electrical design requirements based on plant design criteria and codes.
  • Design electrical power distribution systems for industrial facilities.
  • Prepare and review electrical design documents including SLDs and load lists.
  • Specify equipment such as transformers, switchgear, MCCs, drives, batteries, UPS.
  • Develop design criteria and technical specifications.
  • Perform short-circuit, load flow, and protection studies.
  • Coordinate interfaces with automation, instrumentation, mechanical, and process teams.
  • Contribute to quality, licensing, and qualification planning.
  • Support tenders and supplier evaluations.
  • Ensure compliance with standards and safety requirements.

Job description

We are currently searching for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join an innovative engineering team delivering cutting-edge heat-only Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project.

In this role, you will be responsible for the design and development of electrical systems that ensure reliable, safe, and efficient plant operation. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and contribute across the full project lifecycle – from early concept design through detailed engineering and commissioning.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Define electrical design requirements based on plant design criteria, safety requirements, and applicable electrical and nuclear codes and standards.
  • Design electrical power distribution systems for industrial facilities.
  • Prepare and review electrical design documentation, including: Single line diagrams, Electrical load lists, Power system calculations, System descriptions
  • Specify and select electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, MCCs, drives, batteries, UPS systems, and cabling.
  • Develop electrical design criteria and technical specifications for project execution.
  • Perform and review: Short-circuit studies, Load flow analysis, Protection coordination studies.
  • Support tender preparation and technical evaluation of supplier proposals.
  • Coordinate electrical interfaces with automation, instrumentation, layout, mechanical, and process engineering teams.
  • Participate in quality, licensing, and qualification planning related to electrical design.
  • Contribute to: Design reviews, Safety assessments, Factory acceptance tests, Commissioning activities
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards, codes, and safety requirements.
Key Experience and Skills:
  • MSc or BSc in Electrical Engineering.
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical engineering within industrial projects (energy, process industry, nuclear, or similar)
  • Strong knowledge of medium and low voltage power distribution systems.
  • Proven experience in preparing technical specifications and engineering documentation
  • Familiarity with SFS 6000, 6001 and 6002, and international standards such as IEC, EN, or equivalent.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.
