Job summary

Hostaway is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Core team. This fully remote role is open to candidates based anywhere in the EMEA region, enabling collaboration with global peers and customers.

You will design, build, and operate backend services in PHP and Go, drive monolith extraction, and shape API strategy for AI-driven workflows while coordinating with Product and frontend teams to optimize performance and delivery.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of backend engineering experience in a high-traffic environment.
• Proficiency in PHP and/or Go with willingness to work in both.
• Experience decomposing monoliths or extracting services with pragmatic judgment.
• Experience designing REST/GraphQL APIs with clear versioning and consumability.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and Domain Driven Design (DDD).
• Experience with cloud environments (AWS is a plus).
• Experience with message queues (e.g., AWS SQS) is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate backend services in PHP and Go.
• Drive extraction of services from the monolith with clear ownership and migration paths.
• Collaborate with Product Manager to shape technical direction and value.
• Design and ship APIs for AI agent and automation workflows.
• Improve page speed and end-to-end performance with frontend peers.
• Contribute to high-level architectural decisions and move fast with intent.
• Leverage AI coding tools to accelerate delivery while maintaining quality.
