Job summary

United States Digital Space LLC in Helsinki is seeking an experienced Android engineer to join our Core Sensing Squad. You will own features for the Ring-enabled Android app using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Room, Coroutines and Flow.

You will collaborate with engineers, designers, data scientists, product managers and health science experts across EU/US, ensuring end-to-end quality and performance in a fast-growing health-tech product.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of professional Android development experience.
• Deep experience with Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and modern Android app architectures; strong fundamentals in Android platform APIs.
• Proven experience building complex user-facing features and reusable UI components.
• Ability to own end-to-end initiatives with minimal guidance.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Architect, design, build and maintain features for the Android app using Kotlin, Compose, Room, Coroutines and Flow.

the company’s engineering organization consists of talented developers distributed across the EU and US. For day-to-day feature work, our engineers are organized into smaller cross-functional, geolocation-specific feature squads or teams. Our squads have a great deal of autonomy and are responsible for the development and architecture of their features. Squads take full ownership of their code and handle everything from concepting, design and implementation to release, maintenance and bug fixes.

Your team, the Core Sensing Squad, is a platform team making sure that the signals collected from the ring are available in the app for other feature teams to build on top of. As such we oversee a large variety of sensing measurements and design complex technical solutions to ensure that the end to end features built on top of them works as intended. In addition to building the plumbing, we also explore new sensing areas that might not yet have another home. We also focus on evaluating and integrating new cutting edge algorithms into our product. We are a small but ambitious team, developing features that are at the edge of what is possible with modern Android phones. If this sounds interesting, come join us!

What you will do:

• Work in a passionate and senior team on cutting edge problems in the tech and health domains.
• Architect, design, build and maintain features to the the company Android app using Kotlin, Compose, Room, Coroutines and Flow.
• Work in a cross functional squad together with a passionate group of engineers, designers, data scientists, our product manager, health science experts and other stakeholders.
• Refactor existing features to improve code quality, performance, and maintainability.

Requirements

We would love to have you on our team if you have:

• A minimum of 5 years of professional development experience:
• either shipping Android apps. In this case we expect you to have deep experience with Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and modern Android app architectures as well as strong fundamentals in Android platform APIs.
• or an otherwise strong technical foundation and the proven ability to adapt to new codebases/languages.
• Proven experience building complex user-facing features and reusable UI components.
• Drives and delivers on complex and often ambiguous initiatives with minimal guidance
• Solid understanding of what you build as a whole, both from an engineering and end-user perspective. You like taking end-to-end ownership.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills: Able to work effectively with designers, product managers, and other engineers.
• Strong communication skills: Able to articulate technical concepts and decisions clearly, both verbally and in writing.
• Problem-solving mindset and adaptability.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Comfortable with change, ambiguity, and learning new technologies or approaches as needed.
• A proactive, get-things-done attitude.

We also appreciate if you have one or more of the following:

• Experience with health, wellness, or fitness products.
• Strong systems architecture and performance optimization experience.
• Ability to mentor other engineers and increase developer productivity across teams.
• Experience working asynchronously across countries and time zones.
