Job summary

Mapbox is seeking a software engineer to own the technical design and delivery of multi-component AI systems across its Search, Places, and Platform teams. You will build data pipelines, evaluate models, and shape tooling to ship reliable AI features for developers, agents, and consumers.

The role requires leading cross-team initiatives, managing latency/cost, and participating in on-call rotations to keep services available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in STEM and 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• 2+ years shipping LLM-backed features to real users.
• Design evaluations for non-deterministic systems.
• Data engineering depth: SQL and distributed processing.
• Fluency with tool calling and agent orchestration.
• Working knowledge of more than one agent harness.
• Strong Python or TypeScript.
• Experience diagnosing latency in distributed paths.
• Comfort with ambiguity and shipping narrow, functional solutions.
• Clear written communication in a distributed team.

Responsibilities

• Define product design, measurement framework, and evaluation for non-deterministic behavior.
• Run continuous evaluation of APIs, SDKs, data representations, or reference applications.
• Own the MVP against a north star technical design.
• Build data pipelines and tooling: ingestion, conflation, entity resolution, quality checks, batch and streaming jobs.
• Track external datasets and models, evaluate fit and decide to adopt or build.
• Design feedback loops to generate data to improve the product.
• Design the boundary between a model and the tools it calls, manage the harness.
• Work toward latency and cost targets per request: streaming, caching, routing, prompts.
• Build internal harnesses and tools (CLI, MCP) for rapid iteration and share generalizable parts.
• Raise the bar on code and design review; mentor others in eval practice.
• Some technical questions are open; contribute to answers.
• Participate in on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 availability.
