Job summary

Aiven is seeking a pragmatic automation-focused engineer to redesign and automate cross-functional processes at our Helsinki HQ. You will map real workflows, decide what to automate, and build software and agents to support production systems used by Finance, Operations, and Sales.

Work closely with business owners and engineering teams, ensuring solutions are observable, recoverable, and safe to run in production, while promoting clear policy and adoption across the company.

Job description

We’re a global team of over 400 people, working together to push the boundaries of open-source technology and multi-cloud solutions. Our vision is to help developers, builders, and creators bring their ideas to life with speed and simplicity, by providing a cloud data platform that makes open‑source databases, search, streaming, and application infrastructure easily accessible to everyone.

The Role

You find business processes that should work differently, redesign them with the people who run them, and build the software and automation the new process needs.

The work is usually in the gaps between people and systems: manual handoffs, duplicated work, and decisions that still depend on people to coordinate them.

You'd join a small team responsible for the data, systems and internal software behind how Aiven operates. You'll work closely with teams across the business and our strategy team. We're based at Aiven's Helsinki HQ and work together in the office three days a week.

Your job is to work out what should disappear, what needs software, where a model helps and where a person should still decide and then build it.

There's more work than we can take on. Part of the job is deciding, with the team and business owners, which problems are worth solving.

What good looks like: Within your first six months, at least one manual, deadline‑driven workflow runs without someone manually coordinating it. Failures recover safely, exceptions reach the right person, and the process is observable and auditable.

What this is not: This isn't ERP administration, legacy RPA or a point‑and‑click automation role.

What You'll Own

• Learn how a process actually works, including the unofficial steps and the exceptions, then redesign and automate it end to end. You might work across Finance, People or Go‑to‑Market.
• Decide what can be encoded as rules, what benefits from a model or agent, and which decisions should still reach a human. Build the exception handling and controls around that.
• Write code, work with APIs, build integrations and agents, and put the result into production. We use AI coding tools heavily and use n8n where it fits. The language or framework matters less than the engineering standard.
• Make sure what you build works reliably in production: observable, recoverable, and safe to run against important business systems. Reuse what works so the second process is easier than the first.
• Business owners own policy and adoption. You own the technical design and implementation.

What We're Looking for

• You’ve built production systems people depend on. You've connected systems with your own code and APIs and owned the result once it was live. Tests, observability, retries and failure handling are part of how you work.
• You’ve worked close to the business. You've spent time solving problems with Finance, Operations, Sales, People, Support or another business function. You can sit with the people doing the work, tell the real process from the documented one, and turn something nobody fully wrote down into something you can build.
• You have product judgment. When someone asks you to automate everything after a ticket is created, you ask why the ticket exists.
• You learn domains quickly. We don't expect you to arrive knowing order to cash, procurement or month‑end close. You'll need to learn fast, find the edge cases and know when you don't yet understand enough to automate something safely.

Nice to have

Experience in finance or another controlled operational domain helps. So does having put LLMs or agents into production.
