Postdoctoral Researcher, Operator Theory and Complex Analysis

The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position (Operator Theory and Complex Analysis) at the Department of Physics and Mathematics on the Joensuu campus. The position will be filled for a fixed term of two years as from 1 November 2026 (or starting date as agreed).

Role and salary

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcherto work full-time in the field of Operator Theory and Complex Analysis. The Postdoctoral Researcher will conduct research as part of the Research Council of Finland project “Spectral and Asymptotic Analysis of Structured Matrices and Operators.” The project focuses on the spectral theory and asymptotic analysis of structured matrices and operators, Crouzeix theory and numerical ranges, as well as applications to mathematical physics and random matrix theory.

As our new Postdoctoral Researcher, your main responsibilities will include:

  • conducting high-quality research in the field of Operator Theory and Complex Analysis, and related scholarly activities, including the preparation of manuscripts for publication
  • producing high-quality scientific publications and reporting research outcomes
  • presenting research at conferences and other academic events
  • contributing to teaching activities and the supervision of PhD and Master’s students (up to 5% of the position)

The position will be filled for a fixed term of two years as from 1 November 2026 (or starting date as agreed)due to the position pertaining to a specific project task. A trial period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job-related salary element and a personal salary element. For a Postdoctoral Researcher, the job-related salary element is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff. The personal salary element is 6–50% of the job-related salary element. At the beginning of the employment, the total salary will be approximatelyEUR 3,985 – 4,190 /month.

Our requirements and expectations

Requirements

  • a doctoral degree, e.g., in mathematics or another relevant field. The doctoral degree may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position (a net period of time, which does not include parental leave, military service, etc.)
  • good skills in spoken and written English
  • a strong background in concrete operator theory, complex analysis, and quantum physics, as demonstrated through their publications and an interview.
