Job description

The Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Music, Mind, Body and Brain at the Department of Music, Art and Culture studies of the University of Jyväskylä is seeking to recruit 5-9 Postdoctoral Researchers for a period of three years, starting 4.1.2027. The rationale for a fixed-term position is an externally funded project.

The Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Music, Mind, Body and Brain (2022–2029; www.jyu.fi/mmbb) studies the cognitive, emotional, bodily and interactive experiences of music. More specifically, the CoE investigates how the experience of music changes across the life span and manifests itself in health and illness, as well as how music-based interventions can support learning, development, everyday well-being, and rehabilitation. The research focuses on elucidating the individual, situational, musical and psychological mechanisms that underlie the phenomena in question and explain the power of music. A central component of the research programme is the integration of experimental, computational, psychometric, and statistical approaches to investigate the mechanisms and outcomes of musical engagement.

The selected candidate will:

  • Conduct fundamental research advancing our understanding of music, mind, body, and brain interactions
  • Design and carry out studies in one or more of the Centre's thematic areas
  • Apply advanced quantitative methods, computational modelling, psychometrics, or statistical analyses to complex behavioural and/or physiological datasets
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary collaborations across psychology, music, neuroscience, education, health sciences, and computer science
  • Publish research findings in leading peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences
  • Participate in the supervision and mentoring of master's students
  • Contribute to the development of grant applications and collaborative research initiatives
Who we are looking for

The successful applicant will meet the following requirements:

  • A PhD in psychology, neuroscience, musicology, music technology, education, health sciences, computer science, data science or other relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the Centre's core research themes, such as music and emotion, movement and entrainment, social interaction, development, health and wellbeing, or music therapy
  • Strong methodological skills in experimental research, computational modelling, psychometrics, statistical analysis, or a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches
  • A strong record of productive and innovative research demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative interdisciplinary research team

The duties, qualification requirements, and language skills of a postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines.
