Job description

At IQM, we build world-leading quantum computers for the well-being of humankind. We design systems to tackle computational challenges beyond the practical limits of classical machines. Our work sits at the edge of science and engineering. It's complex, demanding, and deeply collaborative. We turn deep research into reliable, full-stack systems that drive discoveries in fields like medicine, energy, and technology, reshaping how the world computes.

Join the team that gives quantum a heartbeat.

The work

Mechanical engineering is at the core of every quantum computer we build. As a Mechanical Engineer at IQM, you'll transform complex engineering concepts into robust, manufacturable hardware that powers next-generation quantum systems. From precision mechanical structures and cryogenic assemblies to production-ready designs, your work will directly shape the performance, reliability, and scalability of our technology.

You'll join a multidisciplinary engineering team, collaborating daily with experts in cryogenics, microwave engineering, electronics, manufacturing, and system integration. Together, you'll solve challenging mechanical problems and turn innovative ideas into hardware that leaves our factory and reaches customers around the world.

What you'll actually do
  • Design, develop, and document mechanical components, assemblies, and system layouts for IQM's quantum computing platforms, including framing, mounting solutions, cable routing, and cryogenic structures.
  • Create detailed 3D models and production-ready designs using Autodesk Inventor and Vault while integrating third-party components into larger system assemblies.
  • Collaborate closely with specialists in cryogenics, vacuum technology, microwave engineering, and manufacturing to develop reliable, high-performance mechanical solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews, evaluate engineering trade-offs, communicate technical decisions, and work directly with suppliers and manufacturing partners to bring designs into production.
  • Produce high-quality engineering documentation, including production drawings, assembly instructions, component specifications, and regulatory compliance documentation that supports manufacturing, logistics, and product lifecycle management.
  • Take ownership of your designs from concept through release, continuously improving mechanical solutions with manufacturability, quality, and long-term reliability in mind.
What we're looking for
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Equivalent industry experience is also valued.
  • At least 2 years of experience designing and developing mechanical systems for industrial, scientific, or commercial products.
  • Strong experience with CAD design, preferably Autodesk Inventor and Vault, or comparable CAD and PDM platforms.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, technical documentation, manufacturing processes, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and structural analysis.
  • A collaborative engineer who enjoys working across disciplines, takes ownership of their work, and communicates technical ideas clearly.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and a continuous improvement mindset.
Nice to have
  • Experience with cryogenic, vacuum, or microwave technologies.
  • Experience developing hardware for highly regulated, precision engineering, scientific instrumentation, semiconductor, medical device, or similar high-tech environments.
Why IQM?
  • Full-stack quantum computing: From quantum hardware to software layers and beyond, we build across the full-stack.
  • High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours.
  • Never the smartest: Expect to learn constantly. You won't always be the smartest person in the room, and that's the point.
  • Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. They're friendlier than they look!
  • The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed.
  • Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market that's still being defined.
The future of computing won’t build itself. You might be one of the few who do.
  • Meet our people and learn more about IQM on our stories page.
  • Explore our scientific publications.
