Job summary

The Ohio State University is seeking a Facilities Mechanical Steamfitter Technician for University Hospital's Facilities Administration. You will inspect, install, repair, and maintain welded piping systems and related equipment across boiler rooms, steam, condensate, and chilled water systems, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Under supervision, you’ll read blueprints, document work, and support emergency response, with shift adjustments and potential overtime.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; two years’ maintenance, pipefitting and/or welding experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and basic understanding of plumbing code compliance.
• OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety card or higher.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to read technical drawings.

Responsibilities

• Pipefitting and welding: install, repair, and maintain welded piping systems; review blueprints; measure, cut, and fit pipes; identify leaks; perform preventive maintenance.
• General duties: ensure regulatory compliance; document tests; update drawings; assist other staff; respond to emergencies; maintain safety and cleanliness.

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Facilities Mechanical Steamfitter Technician

Function Statement:

Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of mechanical systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all welded piping systems and equipment. Piping systems and equipment include, but are not limited to boilers, compressed gas systems, steam & condensate systems, air compressors, laboratory and industrial kitchen equipment, steam stations, heat exchangers, condenser water, condensate, chilled water and heating hot water. Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.

Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; properly completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operates department vehicles; performs other duties as assigned. Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24-hour emergency call.

Job Duties:

Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties and other job-related duties as required.

Pipefitting and welding: (70%)

Installs and repairs and maintains all welded piping systems and components. Reviewing blueprints and technical drawings, Installing, repairing and replacing piping and components. Measuring and cutting pipes using hand and power tools. Inspecting and identifying leaks. Installs, certifies, repairs, replaces and performs preventative maintenance on piping systems and equipment (e.g., meters, valves, piping). Troubleshoots and resolves piping system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks). Performs preventive maintenance tasks. Performs equipment installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving, and welded piping systems). Addressing customer queries. Cleaning the work area after work completion.

General Duties (30%):

Technical Support:

Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes. Documents regulatory compliance tests. Inspects and tests installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards. Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff. Troubleshoots and resolves field problems. May assist lower-level technicians. Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs. Updates building drawings. Participates on emergency response teams.

Communication / Record Keeping:

Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders. Submits material and equipment purchase requests (e.g., eRequests, eMaterials). Provides feedback on materials. Creates estimates for small projects. Inform customers when tasks are completed. Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed.

Other Department Duties:

Participates in professional development/ continuing education activities: obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc. Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations. Participates on emergency response teams. Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department. May participate on committees. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of: Ohio plumbing code (e.g. fittings, water supply systems, sanitary drainage systems, waste, stacks-vents, traps, piping and storage systems). planning and prioritizing work, resource management, troubleshooting mechanical systems, boiler operation fundamentals, ac/dc theory, relationship of preventive maintenance and equipment life cycle, steam system fundamentals (e.g., condensate, temperature and pressure relationships, flow, regulation and uses)

Minimum Classification Requirements:

High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; two years’ experience in maintenance, pipefitting and/or welding trade and related equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience; Efficient skills and knowledge in using pipefitting and welding tools and equipment. A basic understanding of plumbing code compliance. Knowledge of piping components (i.e. types of valves, fittings, types of piping). A valid driver’s license. Successful completion of probationary period. Valid OSHA 10-hour

General Industry Safety and Health card.

Desired Qualifications:

Associates/technical degree or Vocational certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field; boiler operator’s license (e.g., low pressure, high pressure); valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card. Valid AWS Certified Welder certificate desired; boiler operator’s license (e.g., low pressure, high pressure); basic understanding of university building design standards (BDS) related to the maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment; basic understanding of the project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors. Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time.

Unusual Work Conditions:

May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time. May work in cramped spaces.
