Overview

Doctoral Researcher (simulation-based inference) at Tampere University. We are inviting applications for a PhD student position in simulation-based inference, a field at the intersection of statistics and machine learning, with applications across physics, economics, population genetics, epidemiology, and beyond.

We and Tampere University of Applied Sciences foster a multidisciplinary, inspiring research environment focused on high-impact work. The position is located in Tampere, Finland.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out high-quality research on mutually agreed topics, and publish or present results in top computational statistics and machine learning journals/conferences.
  • Complete a doctoral degree, including mandatory study credits required.
  • Assist in teaching tasks and undergraduate supervision (up to 5% of total working time).
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, the candidate should have a master’s degree (or equivalent eligibility for doctoral studies) in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, or another applicable field by the start of employment. A mathematical maturity and interest in theory-driven research grounded in mathematical modeling of physical systems is expected. The candidate should possess a solid foundation in statistical modelling and basic knowledge of machine learning; proficiency in Python; strong oral and written communication skills in English (including satisfaction of the language skill requirements of the doctoral program of the discipline).

Prior research experience is not mandatory but may be considered an advantage. The candidate should clearly state their motivation for pursuing a doctoral degree in the cover letter.

We offer

The expected starting date is December 1, 2025, or as soon as possible. A later starting date is possible with a valid reason. The latest possible starting date is February 1, 2026. The duration of employment is 4 years, with a trial period of 6 months.

Starting salary is €2,738 per month, with rises based on demonstrated PhD progress. The salary is in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position includes benefits such as occupational healthcare, sports facilities, flexible working hours, campus staff discounts, and travel costs/daily allowances for presenting research at major conferences.

Location: Tampere, Finland — the largest inland city in the Nordic countries.
