Job summary

Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions in Tampere, Finland, seeks a Data Scientist to design and build analytics solutions. You will work with Data Engineers and Developers to gain insights that improve fleet productivity, safety and sustainability.

You will develop predictive models, real-time anomaly detection, and data pipelines, using telemetry and maintenance data. A Master’s/PhD in a quantitative field, strong Python/ML skills, and fluent English are essential.

  • Strong programming skills in Python; knowledge of ML methods and analytics tools.
  • Excellent written and spoken English; ability to work across cultures and geographies.

  • Design real-time anomaly detection based on time-series modelling.
  • Combine telemetry, maintenance and logistics data to develop valuable insights and solutions.

Job description

Business Area Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is a global leading supplier in equipment and tools, parts, service and technical solutions for the mining and construction industries. Applications include rock drilling, rock cutting, loading and hauling, tunnelling and quarrying. Parts & Services Division is now looking for a Data Scientist to support the growing demand for analytics. You will be designing and building market leading solutions to boost the business of internal and external customers. This position full-time, permanent and based in Tampere, Finland.

What difference will you make?

As a Data Scientist, you are responsible for developing advanced analytics solutions. You work with Data Engineers, Software Developers and other subject matter experts to gain and share insights into data. Your role contributes directly to improving fleet’s productivity, safety and sustainability. Your produced results will help reduce energy usage and material wastage. You will report to the Productivity & Reliability Centre Manager.

Your main responsibilities will include
  • Build state-of-the-art predictive models and algorithms to support operations and business decisions
  • Design real-time anomaly detection based on time-series modelling
  • Combine telemetry, maintenance and logistics data to develop valuable insights and solutions
  • Proactively identify and champion solutions that solve complex problems across multiple data sources
  • Participate in the design and execution phase of data pipelines
Your profile

Strong mathematical & analytical background and good coding and machine learning skills are key to succeed in this role. You have a Master’s/PHD degree in applied physics/mathematics or computer/data science. You have the curiosity to explore new ideas and develop them into robust solutions in collaboration with the team. You have the needed skills and qualities to work in analytics, including:

  • Extensive experience in working with analytics tools and programming languages such as Python or JavaScript
  • Knowledge of applied analytics and machine learning methods
  • Curious mind and ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of data modelling and database technologies
  • Experience in working with common visualization tools
  • Previous experience in software development and data engineering is seen as a distinct advantage.

Experience in mining/construction or heavy machinery industry is welcome. You are confident in presenting to different audiences, influencing others, and collaborating across organizations, cultures, and geographies. Strong knowledge of written and spoken English is essential.
