A leading organization is seeking a CEO to guide sustainability initiatives in the forestry sector. The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree and extensive experience in international relations and public speaking. Responsibilities include negotiating with stakeholders and representing the organization at critical events. The role offers flexible working arrangements and requires domestic and EU travel.
The CEO is the head of the AEFC office in Tampere where there will initially be two other officers. They will work weekly with the AEFC Executive Committee comprising the CEO, the Chair and the Heads of the AEFC Committees on standard & auditing and on finance & administration. The CEO is responsible for running the daily affairs of the office, implementing the agreed development strategy of the AEFC as well as being part of formulating it. The CEO is responsible for negotiating new AEFC national initiatives (creation of national forestry standards based on AEFC global standard principles), meeting with funders and major AEFC customers, and representing the AEFC at key conferences, seminars and international negotiations.
The successful applicant will have a suitable Master’s or higher degree in the forestry / timber use sector, or be able to demonstrate good knowledge of the sector acquired through previous employment. Previous commitment to and experience of conservation and sustainability issues including possible letters of recommendation is required. The applicant should also demonstrate a thorough understanding of global sustainability challenges in general and those of the forest sector in particular: as CEO of the AEFC they will be formulating and leading some of the most significant wood sector sustainability initiatives in the world, entailing a thorough understanding of the challenges involved.
As CEO, you will need to be a confident public speaker and ready to lead the AEFCs growing team of forestry and marketing experts. Negotiating skills are important, as you will liaise with many forest owners, timber users and retailers around the world. Experience of working with or in NGOs, forest certification and marketing / retailing is a bonus.
The language of the AEFC is English: fluent written and spoken English at a high level is essential. Fluency in other languages is desirable.
The default workplace is the AEFC main office in Tampere, Finland (Relocation package negotiable inc. assistance with housing, children’s schools etc). Working from home is allowed, levels negotiable acc. to the needs of the AEFC and maintaining workplace coherence. Normal working hours are 40 hours per week during 07.00-17.00 Monday-Friday, but the CEO is required to be flexible according to prevailing needs such as preparations for conferences etc. The work is international in nature; international meetings will in the main be held online, but regular travel, mostly within the European Union, can be expected and will be a required part of the CEOs job. The CEO may be required to take part in work-related education seminars e.g. on international affairs or aspects of the wood manufacturing industry if deemed necessary by the employer.
No consultancy or other work outside the AEFC is permitted without prior written agreement from the AEFC.
