Job Summary
The Box Maker/Carpenter in the Freight Section is responsible for constructing specialized wooden containers, crates, and shoring to ensure the safe transport of mission-critical assets, including aircraft parts, engines, and hazardous materials.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Crating & Packaging: Build and assemble wooden crates, skids, and pallets tailored to the dimensions and weight of specific mission.
- Repair damaged containers by replacing wooden parts, removing nails, and reinforcing structures.
- Shoring Construction: Fabricate structural reinforcements (shoring) used to stabilize heavy equipment or bulk cargo inside transport aircraft, preventing movement during flight.
- Hazardous Materials: Construct specialized packaging that complies with safety regulations for transporting flammables, corrosives, or explosives.
- Technical Execution: Interpret blueprints, sketches, and work orders to determine appropriate wood types, fasteners, and structural designs for maximum durability.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate industrial woodworking machinery, including table saws, radial arm saws, routers, power nailers, and drills.
- Logistics Support: Assist Freight Technicians ship and receive material. Utilize forklifts and heavy machinery to move materials; assist in the inventory and loading of outbound cargo.
- Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 lbs unassisted, extended sitting, standing, kneeling, bending and working in confined spaces; work in noisy, dusty shop environments and working in normal and adverse weather conditions at on-site loading areas.
Daily use of shop mathematics: performing basic calculations involving measurements, dimensions, fractions, and angles.
Daily use of working knowledge of lumber, plywood, fasteners, and other materials used for crates, pallets, skids, and shoring.
Daily use of tools; safely operate common woodworking hand tools and power equipment.
Safety: follow applicable workplace safety requirements and properly use required PPE.
Basic Qualifications
- Woodworking Experience: Practical experience in carpentry, woodworking, crate construction, or related work.
- English Comprehension: Ability to read and understand technical instructions, work orders, and Special Packaging Instructions (SPIs) in English.
- Driver's License: Possess and maintain a valid Spanish driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience: 2+ years of performing carpentry, woodworking, crating, or industrial packaging experience.
- Technical Training: Vocational/trade school training or certification in carpentry, woodworking, or related field.
- Material Handling: Forklift, pallet jack, or other Material Handling Equipment (MHE) experience.
- English Proficiency: Intermediate or higher English reading and communication skills.
