Amazon Web Services seeks a Sr. Systems Engineer, Managed Operations to lead automation and operations for the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) for EU customers.

You will build and run high‑availability services (EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, Bedrock), collaborating with global teams to deliver reliable, scalable infrastructure. You will guide operations, mentor engineers, and drive best practices, including on‑call rotations and robust incident response, across Linux and networking domains

Qualifications

• EU citizenship and reside in the EU to operate the ESC.
• Deep systems engineering across hardware, software, networking and OS.
• Scripting in Bash, Python or Ruby is essential.
• Strong Linux and networking diagnostic capabilities.
• Experience creating and improving SOPs and operational practices.

Sr. Systems Engineer, Managed Operations

AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), marking a significant development in Utility Computing (UC). To spearhead this initiative, we are actively seeking experienced senior systems engineers with a strong background in automation and operations. As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in building and leading operations and development teams dedicated to delivering high‑availability AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers.

Key responsibilities:

• Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025 and work closely with global AWS teams.
• Influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
• Collaborate with technology leaders to enhance day‑to‑day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
• Participate in occasional on‑call rotations to resolve incidents occurring out‑of‑hours.

Eligibility requirements:

• Fluency in written and spoken English.
• Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
• Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
• Employees will participate in an On‑Call rota.

Basic qualifications:

• National of an EU member state.
• Deep systems engineering experience with hardware, software, networking, operating systems.
• Proficient scripting in Bash, Python, or Ruby.
• Deep expertise in Linux and networking with proven ability to conduct advanced system diagnostics, implement preventive measures, and resolve complex technical issues.
• Proficient leading the creation, revision, and/or improvement of standard operational procedures (SOPs) and driving operational best practices.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience leading complex, cross‑functional initiatives aligning multiple teams and stakeholders.
• Ability to influence without direct authority.
• Mentoring and developing teams and engineers.
• Experience operating 24x7 high‑availability distributed software applications and performance tuning.
• Experience supporting services in AWS or other cloud systems.
• Proficient with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible).
