Job summary

Pleo is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to shoulder technical ownership of complex enterprise domains, building scalable backend services for our spend management platform. You’ll design distributed systems, apply DDD, and mentor engineers while shaping architecture across teams. Remote work is supported with occasional European travel.

Our stack centers on Node.js with TypeScript, Temporal, SpiceDB, PostgreSQL, Kafka, and Redis, balancing hands-on coding with architectural influence.

Qualifications

• Take technical ownership of complex business domains and design scalable backend services.
• Experience designing distributed systems and APIs with secure auth and OAuth/OIDC.

Responsibilities

• Designing and operating distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and cloud-native services.
• Applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD) to model complex business domains and define clear service boundaries.
• Building maintainable systems following Clean Architecture and similar principles.
• Designing APIs, service integrations, and reliable asynchronous workflows using Temporal.
• Designing secure authentication and authorization solutions with OAuth 2.0, OIDC, WebAuthn.
• Ensuring scalability, security, observability, and resilience in production.
• Continuously improving shared libraries, project structure, tooling, and QA practices.
• Driving architectural decisions, evaluating trade-offs, and mentoring other engineers.
• Leveraging AI responsibly with guardrails and tooling in a fast-paced environment.
