Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech is seeking a seasoned analog/mixed‑signal electronics engineer in Barcelona to own the signal chain and grounding for scalable quantum systems. You will set standards, review designs, and mentor junior engineers while collaborating with physicists and measurement specialists.

You will drive simulations, contribute to PCB design reviews, and help define test plans and validation for cryogenic instrumentation, with a clear path toward leading the electronics department as

Qilimanjaro is building full-stack superconducting quantum computers, from QPUs and cryogenic infrastructure to control electronics, racks, cabling, instrumentation and deployment software. Our Systems & Engineering division is what turns a quantum processor into a complete, reliable, scalable machine.

We are a small, hands‑on team. Every hire shapes what we become.

Why this role exists

The electronics layer of a quantum system (signal chains, grounding, shielding, filtering, low-noise analog, power integrity, PCB design) is one of the main determinants of qubit performance and system reliability. As we scale toward 50-qubit systems and beyond, this layer has to be designed from first principles, not grown from lab habit.

Today our junior engineers are learning fast and carrying real work. What we are missing is a seasoned electronics engineer who designs the signal chain right before it reaches the bench, who simulates signal integrity before a board is fabricated, architects grounding instead of guessing it, anticipates the scaling problem we haven't hit yet, and raises the technical floor of the whole team.

You will become the technical authority for the electronics layer: the person the team turns to for is this signal chain correct, quiet, and scalable? and the person who makes sure the answer is documented, not tribal. You will set the standards and review others' designs, and directly mentor one to two junior engineers, with a clear path to lead the department as the team grows.

  • Signal-chain architecture: Define and document how signals are generated, conditioned, filtered, routed and shielded from the electronics rack to the QPU, both the DC / flux‑bias path (DC to a few hundred MHz) and the RF / readout path (a few GHz). Architecture first, validation second.
  • Grounding and shielding by design: Define the grounding topology, return paths, chassis isolation and rack‑level shielding for each system, documented, justified and repeatable, not resolved ad hoc or outsourced to a consultant.
  • Filtering and low‑noise design: Specify and design filters from requirements (bandwidth, attenuation, impedance, thermal and noise constraints) and drive the electrical‑noise budget of the setup, supplies, references, line‑by‑line.
  • Simulation as a standard design step: Run signal‑integrity and power‑integrity simulations (LTspice / ADS / Sigrity / HyperLynx or equivalent) routinely, during design, before hardware is ordered, not after problems appear.
  • PCB design review: Work with our PCB engineer to catch signal‑integrity, power‑ integrity and grounding problems in layout review, before fabrication.
  • Instrument integration & validation: Integrate and validate commercial control electronics and lab instrumentation (Qblox, QDAC‑class sources, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, digitizers, RF sources, power supplies) and build the test plans that qualify a signal chain before it is handed to measurements.
  • Turning problems into design rules: When a hardware problem is found and fixed, convert the lesson into a design rule, acceptance criterion or validation procedure so it cannot recur in the next system.
  • Mentoring: Be the senior technical reference for junior engineers on noise debugging, grounding, signal characterization and instrument validation. Explain the why. Raise the team's ability to do this independently over time, without becoming a bottleneck.

We're looking for an autonomous, results‑oriented profile who thrives in dynamic environments. We value the ability to make sound decisions, take ownership of one's own work, and adapt with agility to the company's shifting priorities.

You will work alongside physicists and measurement specialists who operate the qubits; the physics will be explained to you. The qubit is, in the end, your most sensitive measuring instrument, but your job is to read what its behaviour tells you about the electrical chain and fix the root cause there. The electronics principles we need are universal. The challenge is applying rigorous electronics engineering discipline to a domain where that discipline is not yet fully established.

Who we are looking for:

A seasoned analog / mixed‑signal electronics engineer who combines strong electronics intuition with structured engineering discipline, and who would rather build something that lasts than firefight what breaks. You have worked where design discipline is not optional, scientific or precision instrumentation, big‑science facilities (synchrotron, particle physics, space, radio‑astronomy), aerospace / defence, metrology, medical or other high‑reliability electronics, and where signal integrity is simulated before fabrication and grounding is architected, not guessed. You enjoy being the senior technical voice among motivated, less experienced engineers. You like making the next setup easier to build and validate than the last.

  • 8+ years of hands‑on analog / mixed‑signal and/or high‑speed electronics design (we care more about depth and judgement than the exact number).
  • Low‑noise and signal‑integrity design from first principles: not catalogue‑part selection.
  • Grounding and shielding architecture: you can design a grounding topology and explain every return path.
  • Filter design from specification: derive a topology from bandwidth, attenuation and impedance requirements.
  • SI/PI simulation as a routine part of your workflow (LTspice, ADS, Sigrity, HyperLynx, or equivalent) — used on real designs, not as an occasional exercise.
  • PCB design‑review depth: you catch layout problems before fabrication.
  • Structured hardware diagnosis: you can systematically separate a grounding issue from a filter‑response issue from an instrument artifact from a software/configuration effect, and document it.
  • Hands‑on by nature: comfortable at the bench (probing, soldering, measuring) and willing to travel to our lab site to debug real hardware. This is not a desk‑only architecture role.
  • Fluent with bench instrumentation: oscilloscopes, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, digitizers, power supplies — and structured test plans.
  • Strong communication in English (Spanish a plus, or a willingness to learn)
  • Superconducting quantum, cryogenic or low‑temperature measurement experience.
  • Familiarity with Qblox, Quantum Machines / QDAC, Zurich Instruments, Keysight, Rohde & Schwarz, Signal Hound or similar.
  • Low‑noise DC biasing, microwave engineering, attenuators, filtering, twisted‑pair / coaxial signal delivery, cryogenic cabling.
  • Designing analog front‑ends, custom instrumentation PCBs or test fixtures.
  • Python for measurement automation, data analysis and hardware validation.
  • Deep‑tech / hardware startup experience where priorities move fast but engineering standards still matter.
What success looks like after 6 months
  • The signal‑chain and grounding architecture is documented, simulation‑backed and enforced as a design standard — not tribal knowledge held by one or two people.
  • SI/PI simulation happens before hardware is ordered, not after it fails.
  • Major noise and grounding issues have a structured diagnosis path and are no longer ad hoc investigations.
  • New instruments and custom PCBs pass a defined validation checklist before lab integration.
  • Junior engineers can run standard noise, grounding and signal‑chain validation independently.
  • The number of hardware problems traced back to avoidable design decisions is visibly falling.
