Job summary

Intellias is seeking an Engineering Lead to drive a large-scale Digital Health initiative, building a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform that connects providers, payers and clinical systems. This is a remote role based in Spain with hands-on leadership and architectural responsibility.

The platform emphasizes FHIR interoperability, data pipelines and cloud-native infrastructure using Python and/or TypeScript, with a focus on reliability, security, and AI-assisted development practices.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, incl. 2+ years in a Tech Lead/Engineering Lead role.
• Proven Healthcare/Digital Health domain experience.
• Hands-on HIPAA PHI-safe engineering practices, access control and audit logging.
• Hands-on experience with FHIR R4 and interoperability standards (US Core, USCDI, HL7).
• Strong Python and/or Node.js/TypeScript in production.
• Experience designing and operating distributed, high-scale systems (APIs, data pipelines, event-driven).
• Strong system reliability knowledge: idempotency, retries, data quality, observability.
• Experience with API security (OAuth 2.0/OIDC, JWT).
• SQL/NoSQL, data modeling and schema evolution.
• Cloud-native environments (AWS/Azure), Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD and automated testing.
• Ability to set technical direction and drive architecture decisions across components and teams.
• Mentoring engineers through reviews, pairing and knowledge sharing.
• Experience using AI coding agents in development lifecycle, esp. when PHI is involved.
• Professional English (B2+) for US-based collaboration.
• Experience with Prefect or Airflow for data orchestration.
• Hands-on Databricks experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor engineers through design and code reviews, driving quality and delivery.
• Define technical direction and architecture across microservices, data pipelines and platforms.
• Build secure, HIPAA-compliant healthcare solutions and PHI-safe practices.
• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to align on security, data quality and reliability.
• Operate and optimize distributed systems with Kafka, Spark or equivalent technologies.
