The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in Barcelona seeks a Junior Post-doctoral Researcher up to 3 years post-PhD to develop advanced human organoid platforms from hPSCs for disease modelling and drug screening.

Key tasks include engineering organoid microenvironments, scalable differentiation methods, and quantitative analyses. The role involves mentorship, project management, and reporting at international conferences.

The Pluripotency for organ regeneration Group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is looking for a Junior Post-doctoral Researcher up to 3 years after PhD thesis defense, to conduct her/his postdoctoral training on the development of advanced human organoid platforms based on hPSC for disease modelling and drug screening applications.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

• Application of engineering approaches to define controlled cell-to-cell and cell-to-ECM microenvironments to enhance organoid differentiation and reproducibility, including synthesis of biomimetic hydrogels, development of organ-on-chip approaches and 3D bioprinting.
• Development of scalable human organoid differentiation approaches from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) in 2D and 3D cell culture settings.
• Development and implementation of quantitative and qualitative assays to monitor molecular and metabolic changes, and cell/tissue functionality during organoid development in 2D and 3D cell culture settings.
• Definition of standardized operational procedures (SOPs).
• Data Analysis & Scientific Output: Independently analyse complex datasets, prepare high-impact scientific publications, and present research findings at international conferences.
• Mentorship & Project Management: Supervise and mentor PhD and Master’s students within the research group, while overseeing project milestones and preparing technical reports, as assigned by the PI.

Requirements for candidates:

• PhD in the field of biology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, biomedicine or similar areas
• Only candidates who are within 3 years of their PhD thesis defense, are eligible to this position.
• Proved knowledge on culture and differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC) (specifically on methodologies to derive hPSC-organoids will be a plus), confocal microscopy and quantitative image analysis, as well as molecular biology techniques.
• Proved experience in bioengineering technologies (i.e. microfabrication, biomaterials, organ-on-chip, bioprinting approaches).
• Ability to work independently and manage complex projects under tight deadlines, experience mentoring junior researchers (MSc or PhD students), excellent scientific writing and presentation skills, teamwork, proactivity, and critical/analytical thinking.
• Competencies and skills: Communication, Teamwork and collaboration, Commitment, Proactivity, Integrity, Critical and Analytical thinking.
• High level of English

Advantageous:

• Application of quantitative imaging approaches in 2D and 3D organoid settings and live imaging setups. Experience in developing custom made scripts for image processing and quantification.
• Experience in analysis of RNA sequencing data (bulk and single cell RNA seq).
