Position Summary

The Construction Environmental, Health and Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving the EHS Management System for the Badajoz site. The role ensures appropriate and effective processes, documentation, reporting, training plans, and policies by working closely with construction, operations, management, and other stakeholders to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement effective controls.

The role ensures that employees, contractors, and site stakeholders work in a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible environment by coordinating EHS requirements across departments, monitoring performance, facilitating incident investigations, and driving a proactive culture of continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Reporting to Project Director, Environmental, Health and Safety Manager is responsible for:

  • Develop, implement, and optimize the EHS Management System by defining, maintaining, and improving processes, documentation, and controls to ensure business requirements, risks, and opportunities are managed effectively.
  • Coordinate EHS compliance across departments by working proactively with construction, operations, management, and stakeholders to embed safe working practices and ensure alignment with governmental regulations and IREN policies.
  • Identify hazards and assess health, safety and environmental risks through regular reviews, inspections, and assessments to implement appropriate mitigation actions and prevent incidents or injuries.
  • Monitor safety and environmental performance by conducting regular facility and operational area reviews, measuring results, and producing progress reports and presentations to support informed decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain EHS policies, procedures, training goals, objectives, and action plans when necessary, ensuring they are practical, compliant, and adapted to the needs of a quickly growing construction environment.
  • Oversee EHS reporting, assurance activities, and performance measurements by collecting, analyzing, and sharing data with internal stakeholders and public agencies when required.
  • Facilitate investigations of EHS - related incidents by identifying root causes, developing actionable insights, and sharing lessons learned across operations to strengthen prevention and continuous improvement.
  • Drive a proactive EHS culture by managing change, challenging accepted practices, promoting accountability, and implementing innovative solutions that improve safety, environmental outcomes.
Requirements
  • Degree or post-secondary diploma in Environmental Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related discipline; professional accreditation is desirable.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in occupational, process, or construction safety, ideally across construction, utilities, electrical infrastructure, or industrial environments.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable legislation, industry best practices, and HSE management systems, with experience implementing practices that drive high performance.
  • An understanding of construction processes and risk mitigation, particularly as they relate to electrical infrastructure safety.
  • Effective communication, influencing, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate with people across different functions, levels, jurisdictions, and cultures.
  • Outstanding consultative, critical thinking, and analytical skills, with the ability to operate strategically and use data-driven insights to inform business decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute plans, hold self and others accountable for performance and deliverables, and drive outcomes with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Working knowledge and experience with computer software tools used for compliance, assurance, reporting, and shared learning.
